A witty satire on language, ideas and the hypocrisies of modern life, yet only intermittently engaging. The author is clever and full of ideas, yet in what was clearly meant to be a great set of screwball send-ups and absurdities I found myself amused but rarely laughing out loud. ( )

I think this is the first book I'd ever gotten on Library Thing.

The books was absolutely hilarious in parts that I read while not half asleep. It helped me relax as I read when it's bed time.

The book is pretty much based on what life is about and makes it funny in the same time. You're gonna love the book and enjoy it!

No it's not boring... I have five children I chase after all day long.

You'll enjoy the book and have a few laughs too!

This book didn't have a point. It's like they threw words on a page and then came up with the craziest way to make them fit together.

As usual, I received this book for free via a LibraryThing giveaway but my candid opinions appear below.

Misanthropology is a book in three parts and the number of the parts is three. It spends its time in more or less equal proportions of short plays, poetry and what the author refers to as 'sermons.'

To say that I had high hopes for this book would be an understatement. To say that they quickly evaporated somewhere in the vicinity of page 15 would be a sadly accurate fact. The author demonstrates a vast erudition and formidable vocabulary but it honestly becomes rather tiresome in short order. Even in cases in which the author has a good idea, somehow the whole thing manages to come crashing down around him by the time a conclusion is reached. Further, the illustrations, so lauded by many reviewers, are simply comic book renditions of a rather puerile nature.

On the bright side, some of the author's poetry is keenly worded and thematically amusing. In particular, 'Twinkle, Twinkle' is an adaptation of 'Twinkle, Twinkle little star' adjusted to be more astronomically accurate. Sadly, it is a rare coruscating gem atop a disappointing heap of offal.

In summary, I wouldn't bother with this had it not come freely of its own accord to my doorstep. The author is a skilled wordsmith but comes up lacking when a story line is required. Anyone experiencing a 'laugh storm' while reading this book (as I have seen some reviewers indicate), is probably in need of medical attention due to a mirth-inducing brain aneurysm. ( )

A very interesting book to bring out when friends (who are into more intellectual and prose-type reading) come around - to share/enjoy over a cup of tea / coffee. Admittedly, not everyone's perfect read, but definitely worth a try - loved being able to skip to different sections depending on how / what you feel like. Love the beautiful hardcover too. ( )

This book is insane. I haven't read anything like this before. The cover is great too, it piques interest to the curious potential readers. I really like the book, it's a quick and easy read but it naturally absorbs you. ( )

Not quite my cup of tea, sadly. The word play and jovial tone were fun, but I couldn't get into it for more than a few sentences at a time! Those who have the stamina for the prose will certainly be happy they made the effort though. ( )

A delightful book full to the brim with witty word-play and comic utterances. I think with this book it is better to dip into it occasionally rather then read at one sitting as the reader will be left gasping for air after a pro-longed swim: such is the effect of Reneau's torrent of words!
There is no way that I can adequately sum up this book, what I can say is that if you enjoy word-play and linguistic slight-of-hand, and have some patience, you may come to appreciate this as unique gem of a book. ( )

Misanthropology is a unique conglomeration of textual tricks and treats. You will find both slaphappy and dark humor with linguistic leaps along the way. Definitely a departure from the tried and true! ( )

Misanthropology: A Florilegium of Bahumbuggery, Reneau H. Reneau Published: 11/03 and
A Newer Testament: Misanthropology Unleashed Published: 10/08

I read the latter first and the first later. The ensuing ticklish brain massage has me panting for more. Reneau’s word play is a delight and his philosophies are maddeningly clever. Broken down into exceedingly different sections, this book can be read chapter bit-by-bit or as I prefer, swallowed in one great hiccupping gulp. If you’re looking for a change of pace, cleanse the pallet and laugh your socks off, then you certainly must read these books! ( )

Mis-Anthropology takes the reader through an extremely unique compilation of conversations, songs and sermons. Reneau is quite a creative story-teller, and I had no idea what was coming next because there were no boundaries, which was lovely.

By far, my favorite piece was the Conversation with Bugby, a man who filmed his own family being eaten alive by a wild cat in order to achieve fame.

A must-read for artists and the like, who crave a glimpse into an innovative collection of journal-like entries. ( )

Very unusual indeed! A brilliant use of language to communicate with cynicism and humor ideas that only the original creativity of this author could muster. Impetuously, I took a quick gander at this scholarly little book and instantly i wondered..."What is this malarky in front of me?" But lo and behold, i perused this gospel of erudition and discovered to my delight a new author with a marvelous sense of comedy and neverending satire revealing stories to delight the soul and poems to tickle the heart and mind.
Do take a look at this book and decide for yourself if you have the inclination to dive deeply into a world of highly sophisticated mumble jumble and chuckle ever after. A great book to give as a present to challenge those in your life who think they are smarter than you. Definitely find a friend whose made it into Mensa and buy him or her a copy! If you are looking for a rollicking good time i highly recommend this unique book by Reneau H. Reneau! ( )
