CHAPTER I.

THE book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the 1

CHAP. I.—Generation of Jesus Christ, &c.] These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens. Ge. ii. 4. This is the book of the generations of Adam, in the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him. Ge. v. 1, 2. He (Jesus) was taken from prison and from judgment, and who shall declare his generation? Is. liii. 8. And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli. Lu. iii. 23, &c. (The Israelites) whose are the fathers, and of whom, as concerning the flesh, Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen. Ro. ix. 5.

The son of David.] When Jesus departed "thence" (from the "ruler's house") two blind men followed him, crying and saying, Thou son of David, have mercy on us. Mat. ix. 27. A woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts (of Tyre and Sidon), and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil. Mat. xv. 22. What think ye of Christ (said Jesus to the Pharisees)? whose son is he? They say unto him, The son of David. He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool? If David then call him Lord, how is he his son? Mat. xxii. 42-45. He (Solomon) shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever. Thine

house (said the Lord to David) and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee; thy throne shall be established for ever. 2 Sa. vii. 13. 16. His (David's) seed shall endure for ever, and his throne as the sun before me. Ps. lxxxix. 36. The Lord hath sworn in truth unto David; he will not turn from it; Of the fruit of thy body will I set upon thy throne. Ps. cxxxii. 11. Unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder; and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The Prince of Peace! Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it and to establish it with judgment, and with justice, from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this. Is. ix. 6, 7. There shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots. Is. xi. 1. Behold, the days come (saith the Lord) that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. Je. xxiii. 5. In those days, and at that time, will I cause the Branch of Righteousness to grow up unto David, and he shall execute judgment and righteousness in the land. In those days shall Judah be saved, and Jerusalem shall dwell safely, and this is the name wherewith he shall be called, The Lord our righteousness. For thus saith the Lord, David shall never want a man to sit upon the throne of the house of Israel. Je. xxxiii. 15-17. If my covenant be not with
