March 6.-First 8 hours: wind, 1. S a. m. to meridian: wind N., 3 to 6; weather, q. Meridian to midnight: wind NW., 6; weather, o.; despatched schooner J. M. Chapman.

March 7.-Wind N.NW., 4; weather, m.; at 10.30 a. m. fell in with United States steamer "Aroostook." From 8 a. m. to midnight: wind N.NE., 4 to 8; weather, q. r. Latitude 38° 14'; longitude 68° 9′.

March 8.-First half: wind N., 6; weather, q. h. Latter part: wind N.N W. 6; weather, q. Latitude 38° N.; longitude 67° 50′ W.

March 9.-Wind N.NW.; first 20 hours, 8; gunboat "Aroostook" lost smoke-stack and main topmast. Latter part: wind moderating; weather, b. c. Latitude 37° 19′ N.; longitude 65° 32′ W.

March 10.-Wind light from the N.; got hawser from " Aroostook," and wore ship. Last four hours: calm, and light airs from S.SW. Latitude 37° 15 N.; longitude 64° 14' W.

March 11.-First half: wind SW., 9; weather, q. Latter half: wind W.NW. to NW., 8 to 4; weather, b. c. Tried to wear ship, with assistance of Aroostook, without avail. Latitude 37° 32′ N.; longitude 64° 40′ W. wind NW., 4; weather, b. c. March 15.-First 12 hours: Baffling airs and calms; weather, b. c. Fell in with schooner O. J. Booth, Captain Burger, of Pawtucket, from Georgetown, D. C., bound to New York, in distress. Supplied her with two barrels of beef, two barrels of pork, 400 pounds of bread, and 50 pounds of coffee. Fell in with Steamer "Saxon, at 2.30 p. m., from Philadelphia, in search of us. Made signal 959 to gunboat "Aroostook." Sent second cutter to steamer "Saxon," and brought on board Lieutenant Spicer, United States navy. 4 to 6 p. m.: wind S. W., 4; weather, c. Transported rudder from steamer Saxon. 6 to 7 p. m. : took a hawser from steamer Saxon, she taking us in tow. Aroostook left for Dearest port. Sp. m.: sent second hawser to "Saxon;" weather clouding up; wind increasing. Latitude 36° 32' N.; longitude 64° 48′ W.

March 16.-Wind S. W., 6; weather, o. Midnight to meridian: wind SW.. 7; weather, b. c.; ship reeling heavily. Latitude 36° 43′ N.; longitude 65° 15′ W. 5 a. m.: lost rudder received from steamer "Saxon." 6.30 a. m.: parted both tow-lines.

March 17-Midnight to meridian: wind S.SW. to W.NW., 6; weather, q. r. Meridian to 6 p. m.: wind N. W., 6; weather, o. Made several unsuccessful attempts to get hawser to steamer Saxon, to wear ship. 7.30 p. m.: steamer bore west one mile. 8 p. m. to midnight: wind N. W., 9; weather, q. r. Latitude 37° 34′ N.; longitude 640 W. Current during 48 hours, N. 54° E.. 54 miles.
