THE date of muster into the United States service of the enlisted men who were original members of the regiment is uniformly given as August 23, 1861 (the day on which the regiment left Massachusetts for the field). After an average service of about a month after enlistment, the men were formally mustered in at different dates, commencing with August 16th, but I have not found it possible to fix the exact individual dates, as muster-in-rolls were not made at the times of muster.
