Ship Island, March 20, 1862.

Pursuant to General Orders No. 20, of February 23, 1862, from the Headquarters of the Army, Major General B. F. BUTLR, U. S. Volunteers, assumes command of this Department.

His Staff is announced as follows:

Major Geo. C. Strong, Assistant Adjutant General, Ordnance Officer and Chief of Staff.

Capt. Jonas H. French, Aide-de-Camp and Inspector General.

Capt. Peter Haggerty, Aide-de-camp.

First Lieut. J. W. Cushing, 31st Mass. Volunteers, Acting Chief Quartermaster. First Lieut. J. E. Esterbrook, 30th Mass. Volunteers, Acting Chief Commissary. Capt. Geo. H. Kensel, Chief of Artillery.

First Lieut. Godfrey Weitzel, Chief Engineer.

First Lieut. J. C. Palfrey, Assistant Engineer.

First Lieut. E. N. Turnbull, Chief of Topographical Engineers.

Surgeon Thomas H. Bache, Medical Director.

Major J. M. Bell, Volunteer Aide-de-Camp.
Capt. R. S. Davis, Volunteer Aide-de-Camp.
First Lieut. J. B. Kinsman.

Ship Island, March 20, 1862.

I. Complete returns of all public property now in possession of the troops in this Department will be immediately transmitted, through the Regimental and Brigade Commanders, to the Chiefs of the several Staff Departments and corps at these Heapquarters, for the information of the Commanding General.

II. A muster of such of the troops in this Department as from whatever cause were not mustered in on the 28th ultimo, or at a subsequent date, will take place on the 21st inst., under the direction of the Brigade Commanders.
