Ship Island, March 28, 1862.

No. 7.

It has come to the knowledge of the Commanding General, that notwithstanding all his efforts to prevent the introduction of intoxicating liquors into the island and among this command, to be used as a beverage, we are still followed by this curse of the army.

Forbidden by every regulation, prohibited by official authority, condemned by experience, it still clings to the soldier, although more deadly, in this climate, than the rifle.

All sales, therefore, within this Depertment, will be punished by instant expulsion of the party offending, if a civilian, or by court martial if an officer or soldier. All intoxicating liquors kept for sale or to be used as a beverage, will be seized and destoyed, or confiscated to hospital uses.

BY COMMAND OF MAJOR GENERAL BUTLER :

GEO C. STRONG,

Assistant Adjutant General
