ACCENT.

In determining the accented syllable it is necessary to know the laws which govern accentuation as well as the laws which limit their operation. These can best be learned by the study of the works of orthoepists such as Ellis, Bell, Walker, Sweet and Smart.

In the following list of words the seat of the chief or primary accent is indicated by an asterisk, the secondary accent by the larger period, and the unaccented syllables by the smaller. These words are given as examples of

words more or less liable to mal-accentuation, and the student is advised to write additional examples under their proper columns.
