It is our purpose to show, in this volume, how the inherent qualities of industry, honesty, perseverance, and cheerful devotion to duty, which characterized the PIONEER Boy, and were the means, under Providence, of his elevation to the PRESIDENCY, have sustained him in that high office, and enabled him to bear the unequalled cares and responsibilities it entailed upon him. The hero of this book being now before the people as a candidate for re-election to the office he has so ably filled, we present, first, a review of his character, and an estimate of his public services, showing wherein Abraham Lincoln is pre-eminently worthy the suffrages of American citizens; secondly, a history of his early life, and of the scenes through which lie his course, from the floorless log-cabin to the White House at Washington. The work therefore appeals to all readers from four to fourscore; and cannot be read without interest and profit, simply from the facts it contains. [iii] |
