AN ACT

For the relief of Elizabeth Frazer and Magdalena Shantz, widows of soldiers of the Revolutionary war.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in General Assembly met, and it is hereby enacted by the authority of the same, That the State Treasurer, be, and he is hereby authorized and required to pay

to Elizabeth Frazer, of Lancaster county, widow of Bernard Frazer, a Elizabeth soldier of the Revolutionary war, or to her order, an annuity of forty Frazer. dollars, during life, to be paid half yearly, commencing on the first day

AN ACT

To re-charter the Easton Bank.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Represen tatives of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in General Assembly met, and it is hereby enacted by the authority of the same, That the charter of the Easton Bank, be, and the same is hereby extended Easton Bank, and continued for the period of fifteen years from and after the expira tion of its present charter, under and subject to all and singular the provisions, restrictions and conditions, and with all the rights, privileges and immunities mentioned and contained in the act of the General As sembly of this Commonwealth, entitled "An Act regulating banks,” passed the sixteenth day of April, Anno Domini, one thousand eight hundred and fifty, which shall take effect and be operative upon the said bank from and after the expiration of the present charter, except where otherwise provided in said act.

Bank required te pay two per cent. upon its capital stock into the State Treasury.

SECTION 2. That the said bank shall pay into the Treasury of the Commonwealth, within three months after the expiration of the present charter, two per centum upon the whole amount of the capital stock thereof, and shall be subject to a tax upon such capital stock, according to the rate and amount provided by the thirty-third section of the act of the twenty-ninth of April, eighteen hundred and forty-four, en titled "An Act to reduce the State debt and to incorporate the Pennsylvania canal and railroad company," in lieu of the tax upon capi tal stock, imposed by the forty-sixth section of the act of the sixteenth of April, eighteen hundred and fifty, entitled "An Act regulating banks" Provided, That should said bank at any time hereafter be made the subject of taxation, not now provided for by general laws, the per centage so paid shall be credited to said bank on account of said additional taxation.

AN ACT

Authorizing the laying out of a State road from the Methodist church, in Cranberry township, Butler county; to the Franklin Road, in Allegheny county; extending the limits of the borough of Lawrenceville, in Allegheny county, and relative to the school districts of the city of Erie.

Commissioners.

SECTION 1 Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in General Assembly met, and it is hereby enacted by the authority of the same, That Samuel Marshall and Samuel Boyd, of Butler county, and Samuel McCaslin, of Allegheny county, be, and they are hereby appointed commissioners to view, lay out, and mark a State road of the breadth of forty feet, beginning at the Methodist Episcopal church, near Caleb Location. Richmond's, in Cranberry township, Butler county, and thence to intersect the public road at that place, to the Franklin road in Pine township, in Allegheny county, at or near the farm of Ambrose Shaffer, by the nearest and most practicable route.

SECTION 2. That it shall be the duty of said commissioners, or & Duties of com majority of them, after having been duly sworn or affirmed before a missioners. justice of the peace, who shall file and preserve the same in his office, to perform all the duties enjoined by this act, with impartiality, carefully to view the ground over which the road to be laid out by them may pass, having due regard to a straight and easy road for the public, at an elevation of not more than three degrees from a horizontal line, and that they shall clearly and distinctly mark the road in such a manner as shall render the route agreed upon found by the Supervisors; and for fulfilling the duties enjoined by this act, the commissioners shall be allowed the sum of two dollars per day, for every day they Compensation. shall be necessarily employed in performing the duties assigned by this act, and the said commissioners are hereby authorized to employ one surveyor, at three dollars per diem, two chain-bearers, and one axeman, at a sum not exceeding for each one dollar per diem.

SECTION 3. That the said commissioners shall make out a fair and Drafts to be accurate draft of the location of the road, noting therein courses and made out and distances, and the places, waters, county and township lines, with such filed. other matters as may serve for explanation, one copy whereof shall be deposited in the office of the Secretary of the Commonwealth, on or be fore the first day of January next, and one copy in the office of the clerks of Quarter Sessions of the respective counties through which the said road may pass, on the time aforesaid, or as much sooner as practicable; and from thenceforth the said road shall be a public highway, and shall be opened and repaired as all other roads laid out by the courts are made and repaired.

SECTION 5. That said commissioners shall meet on or before the first Monday of August, next, or as soon thereafter as a majority of them shall agree upon and complete the location of said road as soon as practicable, and if any vacancy shall occur by resignation or otherwise, it shall be filled by the judges of the Court of Quarter Sessions of the county in which said person or persons so resigning, shall have resided.

SECTION 6. That it shall be the duty of the supervisors of the several townships through which said road shall pass, upon notice given, to proceed at once to open and make the said road as other roads are made. Limits of the SECTION 7. That the limits of the borough of Lawrenceville, in the borough of county of Allegheny be extended so as to embrace within the limits of Lawrenceville said borough, and to be incorporated therein and taxed and governed as other lands in said borough, the following territory now a part of Collins township in said county, to wit: beginning at the northern corner of said borough on the Allegheny river, and running up said river to the line between the lands of the late Doctor Mowry and the Bank of Pennsylvania, thence along said line to the northern corner of the Allegheny cemetery, thence along the line of said cemetery and the Butler road, and continuing on the line of said Allegheny cemetery and the St. Mary cemetery, until it intersects the eastern line of the said borough of Lawrenceville, which said territory shall not hereafter be subject to taxation in the said township of Collins.

SECTION 8. That all the laws now in force as to the said borough of in regard to said Lawrenceville, be, and they are hereby extended to said territory, and borough extend that the provisions of the second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth articles ed to the portion of the second section of the act of Assembly, approved the third day of April, one thousand eight hundred and fifty-one, entitled "An act regulating boroughs," be, and the same are hereby extended to the said borough of Lawrenceville.

Erie city divided into two school

districts.

SECTION 9. That the city of Erie shall hereafter be divided into two school districts, the west ward of said city to constitute the west district, and the east ward shall constitute the east district, each of which wards shall annually elect two persons tax payers and residents of the proper ward, to be school directors for three years, and the elections for school directors held for the said wards on the nineteenth of March last are hereby confirmed; the persons holding the said offices by previous election, and those elected on the said nineteenth of March shall constitute the boards of school directors for the said wards, and the said boards shall by resolution, designate the times when the terms of office of their respective members now constituting said boards shall terminate, and the official acts of the board of school directors of the borough and city of Erie, previous to the passage of this act, and since the passage of the act of seventh of April, eightheen hundred and forty-nine, entitled "an act for the regulation and continuance of a system of education by common schools," are hereby confirmed.

AN ACT

To provide for the erection of a house of employment aud support of the poor in the county of Juniata.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in General Assembly met, and it is hereby enacted by the authority of the same, That Samuel O. Evans, Everard Oles, Steuart Turbett, Joseph Pumroy, and Commissioners. Neal McCoy, be, and are hereby appointed commissioners, whose duty

years; the qualified electors of the townships of Turbett, Milford, Fer-
maugh, and Perryville and Mifflintown borough, shall elect one to serve
two years; and the qualified electors of the townships of Beales, Tuscarora,
and Lack, shall elect one to serve one year; so that those who shall be cho-
sen after the first election, and in the mode above described, may serve
for three years; and one-third shall be chosen annually; and the judges
of the election of said county, shall immediately on receiving the re-
turns from the several election districts, and casting up the number of
votes therein, or within three days thereafter, certify under their hands
and seals, the names of the persons so elected directors, to the clerk of
the Court of Quarter Sessions of the said county, who shall file the said
certificate in his office, and forthwith give notice in writing, to the said
directors, of their being elected; and the said directors shall meet at the
court house, to transact business, on the first Monday of December en-
suing their election.

SECTION 2. That every director elected in the manner aforesaid, or Directors to be appointed as directed by the eleventh section of this act, shall within sworn. ten days after he is notified of such election or appointment, and before he enters upon the duties of the said office, take an oath or affirmation, which shall be filed in the office of the clerk of the Court of Quarter Sessions, which any justice of the peace of the said county is hereby authorized to administer, that he will discharge the duties of the office of director of the poor for the said county, truly, faithfully and impartially, to the best of his knowledge and ability; and in case of neglect or refusal to take the said oath or affirmation within the time aforesaid, he shall forfeit and pay the sum of ten dollars, for the use of the poor of said county, which fine shall be recovered by the directors for the time be
