JAMES ABRAM GARFIELD, the Twentieth President of the U. S. A., was born on November 19, 1831, in the township of Orange, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, about fifteen miles southeast of Cleveland.

The story of General Garfield's life is peculiarly interesting. Careers like his are possible in no other country than this. Foreigners cannot understand how they are even possible here.
