CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY.

AT a meeting of the PRESIDENT, PROFESSORS, and TUTORS of Harvard COLLEGE, Dec. 28, 1799.

THE immediate Government of the UNIVERSITY, thoroughly penetrated by that affecting event, which has fo deeply impreffed the public mind; and viewing it, as a proper and due acknowledgment to the Great "Author of every good and perfect gift," to take a refpectful and pious notice of the recall of diftinguished characters, for important purposes lent to Earth; defirous alfo of joining with all good Societies of men in lamenting the lofs, which the Republic of letters, as well as our common Country has sustained; and wishing in particular that the UNIVERSITY in CAMBRIDGE, which, in confequence of her being fituated in the first scene of the American war, first shared the protection, may not appear forgetful of the Savior of her Country and the Patron of Science ;

VOTED, that the following exercises, being introduced and concluded with prayer adapted to the mournful occafion, and intermixed with facred mufic, inftrumental and vocal, be publicly performed in pious commemoration of the fingular talents, eminent virtues, and unparalleled fervices of WASHINGTON THE GOOD.

EHEU caufam lugubrem in hancce ædem conveniendi ! Quid, nifi eventum acerbiffimum, omnibus publicè deflendum, cordibus imis infligere vulnera potuiffet! Video in hæc atra funebria omnium veftrum ora luctuofiffima oculofque humescentes, lachrymafque ferè effufuros, filentio tristi converfos. TALIS fuifti, O WASHINGTON venerande et dilectiffime, et ficui licitum mortem evitare, tibi fuiffet: Te autem ad tempus modò divino munere donatum terræ Te non tam diebus quàm exiftimatione eximià longé latéque diffufà, famâ infolitâ, gloriâque rariffimâ, quibus honoribus terrenis vero nihil amplius accedere potuiffet, Deus popofcit, refumpfit, ad fidera revocavit tibi ipfi quidem feliciffimum, Reipublicæ vero derelictæ, Patre orbatæ, Ah! quàm acerbum.
