MERCHANDISE BY MAIL TO FOREIGN COUNTRIES.

Some have supposed that small articles of general merchandise could be sent abroad under the head of "SAMPLES OF MERCHANDISE." This is not the case. The limitation is restricted to samples of no money value, as will be seen by the following extract from the Postal Laws and Regulations of the United States of America, 1879:

"Packets of patterns or samples of merchandise for despatch in the mails to foreign countries are restricted to bonâ fide trade samples or specimens having no salable or commercial value in excess of that actually necessary for their use as samples or specimens. Goods sent for sale, in execution of an order, or as gifts, however small the quantity may be, are not admissible."

Most of the goods sent to missionaries come under the second head, "in execution of an order."

PACKAGES FOR MISSIONARIES.

Persons sending packages for shipment to Missionaries should state in general terms both the contents and value: as, "Books, $7.00," "Clothing, $15.00," etc.

There are no specified days for sending out goods; but, in general, it is well to send packages to the Rooms as soon as prepared, that they may be ready for the first shipment. It has very frequently occurred that persons have written to ask when a shipment will be sent, and have just missed the shipment, when if the goods had been sent at once, with a letter or postal giving contents and value, they would have been in season for shipment. Mark boxes and packages 14 Somerset Street, and address letters to Charles Hutchins, No. 1 Somerset Street, Boston.

Missionaries who have occasion to send to friends for packages are requested to call attention to the foregoing.

FOR SALE.

A Valuable Invention, and a complete Novelty in Agricultural Implements. THE MACHINE EXPLAINED. - The driver takes his seat, presses the LEVER, and UP COMES THE HARROW FROM THE GROUND, and he drives to the field ON WHEELS.

With his hand on the Lever, he adjusts the depth, as the inequalities of surface or soil require. Should the teeth become clogged, he presses the Lever, and up comes the Harrow, and the clogs drop away. In sowing Grain, or seeding down to Grass, instead of using the ancient "Bush," where the small seeds are bushed in and bushed out, to dry up, he adjusts his Harrow to a light depth, putting the seed just under the surface, the Roller at the same time doing its work, so as to secure the germination of all the seeds, and giving an even surface, for the reaper or mower

Rights for this machine are for sale by the inventor,

OF THE WORLD.

By Messrs. G. W. & C. B. COLTON & CO.,

172 William Street, New York.

The map consists of two hemispheres, large, on one sheet. Dimensions, 61 by 12 feet. It is printed in oil colors, on fine cloth manufactured and finished expressly for this purpose. The names of the central stations of all Protestant Missionary Societies, both American and Foreign, are shown in bold lettering. The stations of American Societies are distinguished by being underlined in green, and those of other Societies by a line of red color, so that, without the least confusion, these important facts are prominently presented to the eye at first glance.

The stations of the American Board will have a special mark of designation, a heavy red dot. The corners of the map are utilized by being filled with statistics of population of the grand divisions and their sub-divisions. A Manual, or Key, accompanies the map.

Price of Map, with Manual, 820.00.

SPECIAL TERMS.

In order to encourage and ensure the preparation and publication of so important an aid, the officers of the AMERICAN BOARD contracted to take a considerable number of the Maps as soon as issued. In order to encourage the general use of the map in connection with the monthly Missionary Concert and other missionary gatherings, the Map, with Manual, will be furnished, until otherwise noticed, at the office of the MISSIONARY HERALD, or will be sent to any address, by mail, postage prepaid, for $15.00. For obvious reasons, the money must in all cases accompany the order. Send check or postal money order, to

CHARLES HUTCHINS, No. 1 SOMERSET STREET, BOSTON, Mass.

These sketches will be sent free to ministers in charge, on request. They will be sent to others for 6 cents for a single copy, or the set for 30 cents. The Maps and Sketches are placed at these merely nominal prices in order to bring them within the reach of all.
