Within our senses ever dwell,
And worldly darkness thence expell: Long as the days of life endure, Preserve our souls devout and pure:
The Faith, of old by Saints possessed, Root, first, within our inmost breast: And joyous Hope in second place; Then Charity, Thy greatest grace.
All laud to GOD the FATHER be: All laud, Eternal SON, to Thee: All laud, as is for ever meet,
To GOD the HOLY PARACLETE. Amen.
DAWN sprinkles all the East with light: Day o'er the earth is gliding bright: Morn's sparkling rays their course begin; Farewell to darkness and to sin!
Each evil dream of night depart, Each thought of guilt forsake the heart! Let every ill, that darkness brought Beneath its shade, now come to nought!
So that last Morning, dread and great, Which we with trembling hope await, With blessed light for us shall glow, Who chant the song we learnt below,—
All laud to GOD the FATHER be: All laud, Eternal Son, to Thee: All laud, as is for ever meet,
To GOD the HOLY PARACLETE. Amen.
Now that the daylight fills the sky, We lift our hearts to GOD on high,
That He, in all we do, or say,
Would keep us free from harm to-day:
Would guard our hearts and tongues from strife:
From anger's din would hide our life:
From all ill sights would turn our eyes: Would close our ears from vanities:
Would keep our inmost conscience pure; Our souls from folly would secure : Would bid us check the pride of sense With due and holy abstinence.
So we, when this new day is gone, And night in turn is drawing on,
With conscience by the world unstained, Shall praise His Name for victory gained.
All laud to GOD the FATHER be:
All laud, Eternal SON, to Thee:
All laud, as is for ever meet,
To GOD the HOLY PARACLETE. Amen.
NEW every morning is the love
Our wakening and uprising prove,
Through sleep and darkness safely brought, Restored to life, and power, and thought.
New mercies each returning day Hover around us while we pray;
New perils past, new sins forgiven,
New thoughts of GOD, new hopes of Heaven.
If, on our daily course, our mind Be set to hallow all we find, New treasures still, of countless price, GOD will provide for sacrifice.
The trivial round, the common task, Will furnish all we ought to ask; Room to deny ourselves,-a road To bring us daily nearer GOD.
Only, O LORD, in Thy dear love Fit us for perfect rest above; And help us this and every day To live more nearly as we pray.
O HOLY FATHER, HOLY SON, And HOLY SPIRIT, THREE in ONE, Thy grace devoutly we implore, Thy Name be praised for evermore.
[Morning. Third Hour.
COME, HOLY GHOST, with GOD and SON,
And GOD the FATHER, ever One: Shed forth Thy grace within our breast, And dwell with us, a ready Guest.
By every power, by heart and tongue, By act and deed, Thy praise be sung; Inflame with perfect love each sense, That others' souls may kindle thence.
O FATHER, that we ask be done, Through JESUS CHRIST Thine Only Son; Who, with the HOLY GHOST and Thee, Shall live and reign eternally. Amen.
[Morning. Sixth Hour.
O GOD of Truth, O LORD of Might, Who, ordering time and change aright, Sendest the early morning ray,
Kindling the glow of perfect day;
Extinguish Thou each sinful fire, And banish every ill desire: And, keeping all the body whole, Shed forth Thy peace upon the soul.
O FATHER, that we ask be done, Through JESUS CHRIST, Thine Only Son; Who, with the HOLY GHOST and Thee, Shall live and reign eternally. Amen.
[Evening. Ninth Hour.
O GOD, Creation's secret Force, Thyself unmoved, all motion's source, Who, from the morn till evening's ray, Through all its changes guidest the day:
Grant us, when this short life is past, The glorious evening that shall last : That, by a holy death attained, Eternal glory may be gained.
O FATHER, that we ask be done, Through JESUS CHRIST, Thine only Son; Who, with the HOLY GHOST and Thee, Shall live and reign eternally. Amen.
THREE in ONE and ONE in THREE,
Ruler of the Earth and Sea!
Hear us while we sing to Thee
Holy Chant and Psalm.
LIGHT of Lights! with morning shine
Lift on us Thy Light Divine,
And let Charity benign
Breathe on us her balm.
