HYMNS FOR THE DAYS OF THE WEEKS

AFTER EPIPHANY AND TRINITY.

[Saturday Evening, from Epiphany to Lent. MAKER of all things, GOD Most High,

Great Ruler of the starry sky,
Robing the day in beauteous light,
In sweet repose the quiet night;

We thank Thee for the day just gone,
We pray Thee, now the night comes on,
To help us sinners, as we raise

To Thee our loving hymn of praise.

To Thee our hearts their music bring,
Thee our united voices sing;
To Thee our pure affections soar,
Thee may our chastened souls adore!

So when the deepening shades prevail,
And night o'er day hath dropped her veil,
Faith may no blinding darkness know,
But night with Faith's own brightness glow.

O may our hearts repose in Thee,
From every wrongful passion free,
And may no foes with envious toil
Our quiet rest prevail to spoil.

All laud to GOD the FATHER be;

All laud, Eternal SON, to Thee;
All laud, as is for ever meet,

To GOD the Holy PARACLETE. Amen.

[Saturday Evening, from Trinity to Advent.

O TRINITY of blessed Light,

O UNITY of princely Might,

The fiery sun now goes his way:
Shed Thou within our hearts Thy Ray.

To Thee our morning song of praise,
To Thee our evening prayer we raise :
Thy glory suppliant we adore

For ever and for evermore.

Amen.

[Saturday Evening, from Trinity to Advent. CHRIST's servants, while they dwell below,

Six days of earthly labour know:

Six days to bear the Cross have they,
And over Hell to force their way.

But when the conflict shall be o'er,
And conquered sin can harm no more,
The soul, released from fleshly chain,
Shall life's eternal Sabbath gain.

Then, then that Sunday shall ensue,
Whose end no eye shall ever view,
When this our flesh, from sin set free,
Shall put on immortality.

4

Then soul and body shall possess,

United, double blessedness:

When we the ramparts shall ascend
Of that bright Realm which cannot end.

O FATHER, that we ask be done,
Through JESUS CHRIST, Thine Only Son,
Who, with the HOLY GHOST and Thee,
Shall live and reign eternally. Amen.

[Sunday Morning.

THOU hallowed chosen Day! that first
And best and greatest shinest,
Highest and Chief, thou Feast of Feasts,

Of things divine divinest!

On thee, our praises CHRIST adore

For ever and for evermore.

Come, let us taste the Vine's new Fruit,

For Heavenly joy preparing,

On this propitious Day, with CHRIST,
His resurrection sharing;

Whom as true GOD our hymns adore,
For ever and for evermore.

Raise Sion, raise thine eyes! for Lo!
Thy scattered sons have found thee,
From East and West, and North and South,
Thy children gather round thee;
And in thy bosom CHRIST adore,

For ever and for evermore.

5

O FATHER of unbounded might,

O SON and HOLY SPIRIT,

In Persons Three, in Substance One,
Of One Co-equal Merit;

In Thee baptized, we Thee adore,

For ever and for evermore.

Amen.

[Sunday Morning.

THE Sunday Morn again is here,
That every Christian must revere,
For on this Day, the eighth and first,
Our Rising LORD death's fetters burst.

And by His flock, hath CHRIST declared,
His Resurrrection must be shared:

For we, who trust in Him to save,
Have risen with Him, and left the grave.

We, one and all, of Him possest,

Are made most rich, are made most blest;
For all He did, and all HE bare,
He gave us as our own to share.

Eternal Rest, a Home on high,
A blessed immortality,

And peace and gladness, and a throne,
Are all His gifts, and all our own.

And therefore kept must Sunday be
For these things' pious memory,
That Christian men to heart may lay

Why this is called the LORD's own Day.

THOU THREE in ONE! GOD ever blest,
The heart's true peace and very Rest!
Thy love we praise, Thy Name adore,
Both on this Day and evermore. Amen.

[Sunday Morning.

OUR limbs refreshed with slumber now,
And sloth cast off, in prayer we bow:
And while we sing Thy praises dear,
O FATHER, be Thou present here!

To Thee our earliest morning song,
To Thee our heart's full powers belong:
And Thou, O Holy One, prevent

Each following action and intent.

As shades at morning flee away,
And night before the star of day,
So each transgression of the night
Be purged by Thee, celestial Light!

Cut off, we pray Thee, each offence,
And every lust of thought and sense;
That by their lips who Thee adore
Thou may'st be praised for evermore.

O FATHER, that we ask be done,
Through JESUS CHRIST, Thine Only Son;
Who, with the HOLY GHOST and Thee,
Shall live and reign eternally. Amen.
