resulting from intemperance. Mr. George Mitchell's Letters to Earl Russell respecting late events at Warsaw in Poland present the history of an outrage committed on the writer by Cossacks in the streets of Warsaw in October last; who takes the opportunity of informing Lord Russell, in the name of the "most influential men in Poland," that if Her Majesty Queen Victoria "would signify her gracious pleasure, an offer of the Crown of Poland for one of her younger sons, in a document signed universally by the nobility, gentry, clergy, and people of Poland and Lithuania, would be presented to the Queen, that Her Majesty's approval of the offer might be obtained." Mr. Mitchell appears to have been surprised that Earl Russell returned no official answer to this portion of his communication. The Intellectual Observer, a Monthly Review of Natural History, Microscopic Research, and Recreative Science, price one shilling, is a new competitor for public favour. Part 1, containing 84 pages of matter well printed and on good paper, with full-page and other tinted plates and illustrations, contains a variety of articles by well-known authors, among whom Mr. Spencer Cobbold contributes a paper on Flukes (diminutive parasites); Mr. Thomas Wright, one on the Roman cemetery of Uriconium (Wroxeter); Mr. Jonathan Couch, one on the Skipper, Skopster, or Saury; one on A Rotifer new to Britain, by Mr. Philip H. Gosse; and other papers by Mr. Noel Humphreys, the Rev. T. W. Webb, the Hon. Mrs. Ward, and others. The number concludes with a useful resumé of the proceedings of the learned societies, and scientific notes and memoranda. The Leisure Hour and the Sunday at Home, two old-established favourites with the classes of readers whom they address, also put in their claim to notice; and we may at least say that their monthly parts have not been beaten for cheapness even by the latest marvels of cheap monthlies. Both give eighty large pages of matter, double columns, with abundance of woodcuts and a neat wrapper, for fivepence. The Literary Gazette has passed under the management of Mr. Goodwin, well known in connexion with Essays and Reviews, who will henceforth conduct it with a new staff of writers.
