Excerpt from A Discourse on the Character and Death of John Brown: Delivered in Martinsburgh, N. Y. Dec; 12, 1859

My Discourse on the Character and Death of John Brown was published immediately after its delivery, in compliance with the wishes of a very few radical abolitionists. It was favorably noticed by the New York Independent and some other public journals, by rea son of which I received numerous orders for it from all parts of the Northern States, which soon exhausted the edition. In the summer of 1860 I also received letters from Hon. Gerrit Smith, Rev. Dr. Cheever, and other leading abolitionists, expressing hearty approval of the discourse, after which it slumbered for six years almost as quietly as John Brown's body in the grave. But since the close of the war I have received numerous letters asking for copies of it, for which reason I have had published this second edition.

I have taken the liberty of publishing herewith one of the letters above referred to, as also an introduction by my revered friend Dr.
