The value of this multi-volumed gazetteer lies in the concise description of towns, cities, provinces and countries around the world, all beyond the British Isles, as existing in the late 1840s and early 1850s. It has allowed me to appreciate the then outward appearance of a city like Einbeck, Principality of Grubenhagen (later Kingdom of Hanover), its population and religious composition, its local industries (beer and linen), etc., the type of information that helps to assess the strength of push factors (social, economic and/or political) over time that led to emigration.
