'There is much in the volume from which men of all schools of Christian thought may learn lessons of truth and wisdom. Mr. O'CONNOR sets before his readers lofty and ennobling views of duty; and unfolds the inner meaning of our Lord's words with rare thought and keenness. Some of his sentences are perfect apophthegms. for their glowing eloquence and intrinsic beauty we quote two passages. O'CONNOR is master of a style at once musical, clear, and strong.'

PREFACE.

THE FOLLOWING ESSAY is an analysis of St. Paul's argument in his Epistle to the Romans, and was originally intended to appear as an introduction to a body of exegetical and doctrinal notes on that Epistle. Its separate publication arises from the desire to lay before the general reader an interpretation of a very difficult portion of Holy Scripture on the correctness of which he is quite competent to decide. A few notes on texts that seemed to require explanation have been appended.
