The Life and Letters of Washington Irving.

BY PIERRE M. IRVING.

No epistolary or biographical collection in the English language, or perhaps in any other, is comparable with this in the variety, scope, and interest of the topics and the characters introduced. It may be described as, "The Autobiography of Washington Irving as [unconsciously] related in several hundred familiar letters to friends; with pen-pictures of the times in which he lived."

In order to meet the wishes of the large number of owners of Irving's Works who will require this work, as a companion to their sets, the price, now that the work is complete, is fixed at $1.50 per Volume. Complete in 4 volumes, cloth, extra, $6. By special arrangement with Mr. Putnam we are able to supply our agents at his lowest prices.

HEADLEY'S CHARMING BIOGRAPHIES.

LIFE OF NAPOLEON BONAPARTE, Emperor of France.

BY P. C. HEADLEY.

With Steel Portrait, 471 pp. 12mo., Muslin. Price $1 25.

"The lightning may flash and the loud thunder rattle,
He heeds not, he hears not, he's free from all pain;
He has slept his last sleep, he has fought his last battle,
No sound can awake him to glory again."

He was the greatest actor the world has known since the time of Cæsar. He sported with crowns and sceptres as the baubles of a child. He rode triumphantly to power over the ruins of the thrones with which he strewed his pathway. Vast armies melted away like wax before him. He moved over the earth as a meteor traverses the sky, astonishing and startling all by the suddenness and brilliancy of his career. Here was his greatness. The earth will feel his power till its last cycle shall have been run.

THE LIFE

OF

THE EMPRESS JOSEPHINE, First Wife of Napoleon.

BY P. C. HEADLEY.

With Steel Portrait, 383 pp., 12mo., Muslin. Price $1 25.

"Like the lily,

That once was mistress of the field and flowers here,
I'll hang my head and perish."

Josephine, for the times in which she lived, was a model of male character; and if this volume shall make the study of it more general, it will so far extend the admiration of the pure and beautiful, ir contrast with all the forms of corruption humanity could present in a period of bloody Revolution. The Empress was a greater personage than Napoleon in the elements of moral grandeur, and retained her vereignty in the hearts of the people, while he ruled by the unri led splendor of his genius.

THE GENERAL DIFFUSION OF POLITICAL KNOWLEDGE

So justly urged, at the present day, as a means of securing to the American people the blessings of Constitutional freedom, is an enterprise which commends itself to the favorable regard of every true patriot. With special reference to this object, the following works have been prepared by ANDREW W. YOUNG, A. M., of New York; each an independent work of itself, and form ing, together, A COMPLETE POLITICAL LIBRARY.

1.-GOVERNMENT CLASS BOOK: Designed as a School Text-Book for the Instruction of Youth in the Principles of Government, and the Rights and Duties of Citizens.-This work contains:

(1.) The Principles of Civil Government, familiarly explained. (2.) A general view of the State Governments, with a Synopsis of the Constitutions of the several States. (8.) The Government of the United States; comprising the Governments of the Colonies and the Confederation, and the Government under the Constitution, with explanatory notes on the Constitution. (4.) Common and Statutory Law, defining the Rights and prescribing the Duties of Citizens in the Civil and Domestic Relations. (5.) The Law of Nations; or the established usages and customs by which the intercourse of Nations is regulated. The work has received the unqualified commendation of State and County Superintendents, and of the Principals of Seminaries, in several states; and a general effort is now making for its introduction to supply a defect which has too long existed in the course of instruction. It contains 808 pages 12mo. Price, $1. A liberal discount to the Book Trade, and to Teachers.

II.—THE CITIZEN'S MANUAL OF GOVERNMENT AND LAW: Comprising the. Elementary Principles of Civil Government; a Practical View of the State Governments, and of the Government of the United States; a Digest of Common and Statutory Law, and of the Law of Nations; and a Summary of Parliamentary Rules for the Practice of Deliberative Assemblies.

The full and comprehensive title of this work supersedes the necessity of an extended Prospectus. This work is intended for that large class of young citizens who have completed their school education, and for adults generally. It is believed that no other work of its size, containing an equal amount and variety of information useful to every citizen, has ever issued from the American press. It contains 448 solid 12mo. pages. Price, $1 50.

III.—NATIONAL ECONOMY: a listory of the American Protective System, and its Effects upon the several Branches of Domestic Industry.

An important branch of a political education is National Economy. No question has been the subject of more controversy than the Protection of Home Industry by duties on foreign productions. This work is designed to assist our citizens in the investigation of this great question. It is not an Essay or Treatise reproducing the speculative opinions of any one or a few writers on Public Economy. A more valuable service has been performed by giving a faithful history of the Protective System of our country, presenting the arguments of our ablest statesmen on both sides of the question. And as experiment is the true test of a theory, the practical workings of both the protecting and non-protecting policies have been given, accompanied by statistics, to show the effects of these opposite systems upon the agriculture, manufactures and commerce of the nation. 468 pages 12mo. Price, $1 50.

IV.-THE AMERICAN STATESMAN: a Political History, exhibiting the Nature, Origin, and Practical Operation of Constitutional Government in the United States; the Rise and Progress of Parties; and the views of distinguished Statesmen on questions of Foreign and Domestic Policy; with an Appendix, containing Explanatory Notes, Political Essays, Statistical Information and other useful matter.

This work covers the whole period of our governmental history, embracing the Governments of the several Colonies of the Old Confederation during the Revolution, and of the Union under the Constitution. It presents all the prominent questions of public policy which have arisen under the present Government, and which have divided the people into parties from 1788 to 1864. It is the only complete political History of the United States published, and brings within the reach of the people, in a single volume, information which has been hidden away in the cumbrous archives or State papers, and other voluminous works inaccessible to the mass of our citizens. It is recommended by statesmen, politicians, and editors of all parties, as impartial and invaluable, and must become a standard book of reference. The history makes nearly 1,250 pages octavo, and is bound in superior Library style.-Sheep, marbled edges. Price, $4.50 Single copies of these books supplied by mail, post paid, or by Express, carriage paid. Agents wanted in all parts of the country to sell these works.
