THE

[blocks in formation]

To our extreme annoyance the plate for the January No. has been de-
tained through accidents entirely beyond our control. We must throw
ourselves on the indulgence of our subscribers, who are little aware of the
harassing difficulties attending this part of our labors. The delays ensuing
from vast distances, the caprice of individuals, and the illness of artists,
&c. &c., are only amongst the principal obstacles with which we are
monthly obliged to contend, and which often tempt us to lay aside this
troublesome accompaniment to the Review. Rather than adopt this course,
which would be only to spare ourselves, we prefer to make an occasional
appeal to our patrons, with the honest assurance that no pains shall ever
be omitted on our part to meet public expectation in this, as in the other
more important features of this work.
