tumn, and for some reason or other, the book was very generally credited to Mrs. Margaret Deland. The publishers have announced that the author of this widely read and much discussed book is Mrs. Mary Heaton Vorse, whose other books, "The Very Little Person" and "The Breaking in of a Yachtsman's Wife," as well as her frequent magazine stories, have made her name well known to the reading public. She was recently married to Joseph O'Brien and is spending the summer at Provincetown, Mass.

A new volume of present day interest

"Direct Elections and Law-Making by Popular Vote," by Edwin M. Bacon and Morrill Wyman, just published, is a manual for citizens, written in an impartial spirit, the purpose of which is to supply, in concise form, definite information with regard to the several electoral devices designed to establish the system of direct legislation by vote of the people in place of the old methods of deliberative representative government. To this end are traced the inception and development of these devices and exhibits given of them in practical operation. The keen popular interest in this whole subject makes this book very timely.

A thorough study of Ibsen

Otto Heller, Professor of the German Language and Literature in Washington University, St. Louis, has published a volume on "Henrik Ibsen: Plays and Problems. This latest exposition of the art and philosophy of Ibsen was prompted by the steadily growing popularity of the Scandinavian poet in this country and his recognition as the principal dramatist of modern times. Professor Heller's book is based on a thoroughgoing study, not of the plays alone, but also of all the preliminary drafts, scenarios, and jottings recently published by Ibsen's literary executors, and of all the letters, public addresses and casual speeches that have been preserved.

A timely volume

The near completion of the Panama Canal makes very timely the publication of Mr. Harold S. Moulton's book on "Waterways versus Railways," in the Hart, Schaffner & Marx Economics Series. The volume is illustrated with maps and charts and contains the most exhaustive treatment of the comparative advantages of waterways and railways under modern transportation conditions that has ever been undertaken. In its scope it covers the transportation systems of Great Britain, Germany, France, Holland, Belgium, and the United States, with a detailed investigation of the Erie Canal, Ohio River, and Lakes-toGulf waterway projects in this country. Surprising results and conclusions have been reached. While the treatment is necessarily statistical in many parts, it is never technical, and can be followed by the layman as well as by the economist.
