were alarmed and distracted by rumor and report and it seemed as though their future were going to be one of shallows and miseries. Then Thou didst open an unexpected door which brought relief and their later days were better than their former. When so many express gratitude for Thy wondrous providence, we summon courage for ourselves. While we praise Thee for all that has come our way, we also pray that Thy blessing may be given to all troubled and anxious ones, that they may learn to see the silver lining in every cloud. May we receive the pledges of Thy guidance with readiness, and follow the light from morn till eve, and all the time, through Jesus Christ.

THE LORD'S PRAYER.

Tuesday

Tuesday: WHAT IS MAN?

O praise the Lord, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people.

For his merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the Lord endureth for ever. Praise ye

the Lord.-Psalm 117.

O Lord our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens.

Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger.

When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;

What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?

For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.

Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet:

All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field; The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas.

O Lord our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!-Psalm 8:1-9.

We thank Thee, O blessed God, for Thy consideration of us. For the many tokens of Thy love and goodness, we lift up our hearts in praise to Thee. May our appreciation of Thy benefits be seen in the way we live. Thou hast been found of all who sought Thee and they have celebrated their discoveries by word and deed. Thou didst accept their service, not according to their knowledge of Thy will, but according to the spirit of love shown, as they were faithful to their light. They who ardently aspire after Thee are always acceptable in Thy sight, and we are

glad of this. May we zealously and earnestly exalt Thy name, which reveals the character of Thy holiness and kindness. Since we are privileged with the complete revelation of Thyself in Jesus Christ, may we show forth Thy praises with greater ardor, and may the worship of our lives ever make known the praises of Him who has brought us out of darkness into the joy and satisfaction of his marvellous light. Forgive what is unworthy and inconsistent in our lives, and stir within us the flame of divine love, that our behavior towards God and man may be suggestive of the spirit of our Saviour and Lord.

Wednesday

Wednesday: HEARTY THANKSGIVING

O praise the Lord, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people.

For his merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the Lord endureth for ever. Praise ye

the Lord.-Psalm 117.

Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name.

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:

Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;

Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies; Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle's.

...

Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear him.

For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.

As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth.

For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone: and the place thereof shall know it no more.

But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children's children;

To such as keep his covenant, and to those that remember his commandments to do them.

The Lord hath prepared his throne in the heavens; and his kingdom ruleth over all.

Bless the Lord, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word.

Bless ye the Lord, all ye his hosts; ye ministers of his, that do his pleasure.

Bless the Lord, all his works in all places of his dominion: bless the Lord, O my soul.-Psalm 103: 1-5, 13-22.

Wednesday

O Thou Redeemer of our lives, we meet at the close of this day to praise Thee, from whom all blessings flow. We would join our hearts in thanksgiving for what we have received at Thy bountiful hands, far exceeding our merit and more than we could number. A steady stream of manifold mercies has flowed towards us up to the present time. These marks of love divine have dispelled the darkness, lightened our burdens, and made clear our ways. As we rejoice to salute the morning of a bright day, so may we be glad that the Sun of righteousness, with healing in His wings, sheds His gracious rays upon our lives. May we remember that Thou art present even when the day of gloom is on us. On such occasions increase our faith, that we may be possessed of calmness of spirit through confidence in Thee. May all who have such faith keep growing strong and not be weary in well doing. May the counsels and comforts of the Gospel receive due regard from us and may we make it our concern to add to our faith virtue, knowledge, self-control, endurance, piety, brotherly kindness, and love and so abound in the riches of Thy grace, through Jesus Christ.
