native artists, amongst whom we may name Alessandro Buonvicino, called also Il Moretto, the founder of the school; Ricchino, a pupil of Moretto; Gaudini, a pupil of Paul Veronese; and Sebastian Conca. The works of the latter, however, exhibit only the decline of art in Italy.

ROCCA D'ANFO,

LAGO D'IDRO.

DRO, the ancient Edrum or Edrinus, is a small village at the southern

extremity of the Lago d'Idro, or Lake of Idro. The road on the eastern side of the lake terminates at this village; but on the other side a carriage road from the Val Sabbia is continued above the precipices overhanging the lake, and passing Rocca d'Anfo, proceeds as far as Ladrone on the confines of the Tyrol. The Lago d'Idro lies out of the travelling route, and is little known except to the inhabitants of the district; but to the lover of the picturesque, it offers beauties of no mean character.

The illustrative view is rendered generally interesting from its being the battle-field upon which a fierce conflict took place between the French and Austrians, in July of 1796. Prior to this contest, the Austrians had checked the career of Napoleon, and even driven his troops triumphantly before them; but the results of the battle of Rocca d'Anfo changed the face of affairs, and restored success to the army of the French republic.

OT a few of the cities of Italy are, in their history, "as like as one pea to another." After having enjoyed more or less celebrity under the republic or the empire of Rome, they experienced one common visitation from the barbarians, afterwards shared in the turbulence of the middle ages, and ultimately fell under the yoke of a foreign despot. Bergamo is included in this class; and the only distinctions that individualize it, are the tradition of its great antiquity, and the fact of its having been the birth-place and early residence of the father of Tasso.

There are not many objects of striking interest in Bergamo. Under the portico of the Palazzo Vecchio, is a statue of Tasso, in Carrara marble. One of the most remarkable buildings is the Fiera, a vast quadrangle, with three gates on each side, and courts
