PREFACE.

It was once very properly observed by a minister, at the commencement of a discourse, "In every enterprise of Christian benevolence there are three things indispensably requisite: first, a distinct view of the object to be attained; secondly, means and resources equal to the design; and, thirdly, motives sufficiently powerful to meet its labours and its difficulties. If we embark in a concern without either of these, the first difficulty will paralyse exertion; and a series of discouragements will induce us to abandon the work in despair. But when all these are happily combined, they will not only produce wise and vigorous results, but insure that steady perseverance which, in a good cause, rarely, if ever, fails of success."

Amidst all the difficulties under which we have laboured, it is a heartfelt matter of rejoicing, that our humble instrumentality has already contributed towards the attainment of the great object which first moved our tongue to speak, and our pen to write The formation of Sunday School Institutes for the benefit of Teachers, but especially Elder Scholars, for whom no adequate means of instruction have heretofore been provided.
