SUMMARY OF FOREIGN COMMERCE.

FOREIGN COMMERCE OF THE PORT.

The foreign commerce of the Port of New York during the year ending June 30, 1911 aggregated $1,744,877,134 a gain of $17,871,077 over 1910.

The total foreign commerce of the United States, during the same year, amounted to $3,783,350,177 an increase of $219,010,852 over 1910. New York's share of the total foreign commerce of the United States amounted to 46.12 per cent.

The total exports of the country increased $217,680,491 last year, while the imports increased $1,266,838. The imports were, therefore, practically unchanged while there was a notable increase in the volume. of exports. New York usually makes the best showing in a year of opposite conditions, namely, when there is a great increase in imports. This explains why New York's gain in foreign commerce during the fiscal year 1911 was not as large as in the preceding year, when its increase over 1909 amounted to $205,039,967 which was the biggest expansion in any one year since 1880.

New York's imports during the fiscal year 1911 amounted to $917,121,800 as compared with $952,776,510 in 1910, a decrease of $35,654,710.

New York's domestic exports during the fiscal year 1911 were $807,096,417 against $750,923,856, making a notable increase for the year of $56,172,561.

New York's share of the total imports of the country was in the fiscal year 1911, 55.71 per cent. against 57.92 per cent. in 1910, and her share of the exports of the country was in 1911, 38.52 per cent. against 40 per cent. in 1910. Her share of the total foreign commerce of the United States was 46.12 per cent. against 48.45 per cent. in 1910. This comparison includes merchandise and gold and silver.

In certain leading articles of exports and imports New York made noteworthy gains during the past fiscal year. Her share of the country's total exports of cotton amounted to 10.91 per cent. in 1911 against 9.31 per cent. in 1910; of cotton manufactures 68.71 per cent. in 1911 against 67,53 in 1910; of provisions and dairy products. 54.36 per cent. in 1911 against 51.47 in 1910; of tobacco and its

manufactures 49.01 per cent. in 1911 against 44.69 per cent. in 1910; of copper in 72.19 per cent. in 1911 against 71.12 per cent. in 1910; of cattle 31.45 per cent. against 20.73 in 1910, and of leather and manufactures 54.80 per cent. against 53.15 in 1910.

The showing as regards leading articles of imports is not quite as favorable, yet New York made gains in imports of wool, rubber, tin, copper and furs. Its share of the total sugar imports of the country was in the fiscal year 1911, 66.05 per cent. as against 74.48 per cent. in 1910; of tea 35 per cent. in 1911, as against 41.69 per cent. in 1910; and of cotton manufactures 81.01 per cent. in 1911 as against 84.44 per cent. in 1910.

The following table shows New York's share of the exports and imports of the United States in 1910-1911 of a number of the principal articles of commerce:
