SHAKESPEARE'S MONUMENT IN

WESTMINSTER ABBEY

The monument of Shakespeare in Westminster Abbey was erected in 1741, from funds realized in two theatrical benefit performances. The design was by W. Kent, the carving by P. Scheemakers. The head bears some resemblance to the Chandos Portrait. The left hand points to a passage from "The Tempest." The monument has no high artistic value, being affected rather than natural.
