For a work of such wide scope as The Library of Universal Literature a comprehensive index is in dispensable. Though the work is encyclopedic in Character, and for this reason arranged alphabetically for convenient reference to authors, it is more than an encyclopedia of writers. Were the articles limited to biographies this alphabetical arrangement would answer the purpose Of the most exacting student.
