Mr. J. W. Vilett, admitted Fellow; and Messrs. W. B. Allen and C. Hutchins, Scholars, of St. John's. 28. The Heads of Colleges and Halls, accompanied by the Noblemen, Doctors, and Proctors of the University, went in procession from the house of the Rev. Dr. Parsons, Vice-Chancellor, to the theatre, when C. S. Watkins, Esq. was admitted to the honorary degree of A. M., and the Rev. Dr. Vincent was admitted to the degree of D. D. ad eundem. The Rev. Mr. Crowe, public orator, then delivered, with his accustomed energy and forcible eloquence, the annual speech in commemoration of the benefactors to the University. The gentlemen to whom the prizes of the year had been awarded next delivered their respective compositions. Mr. W. Cleaver, Student of Christ church, recited his Latin poem upon the subject " Delphi." His enunciation" was remarkably distinct, and the verses were written in close imitation of the argumentative style of Lucretius. The Undergra duate's prize, given by an unknown benefactor, and the subject "Mahomet," was spoken by Mr. M. Rolleston, Scholar of University coll. This composition, according to our humble judg ment, was highly meritorious. It was finished off with much of elaborate elegance and pointed propriety, and the heretical adventures of the Arabian Impostor were concentrated, with considerable skill, in a narrow compass. The most striking passage, perhaps, was the delicate eulogium upon "Wedded Love ;" and that holy institution was emphatically contrasted with the illicit, unhallowed, and voluptuous revellings of the Mahometan Paradise. Lastly, the English essay upon "Hereditary Rank," was recited by Mr. C. E. Grey, B. A. Fel. of Oriel coll., and was distinguished by a remarkably elegant and perspicuous style, while the delivery of it was recommended by a manner devoid of all stentation. All the compositions were received with testimonies of great approbation. June 30. Rev. J. Rose, of St. John's, and Rev. R. J. R. Jenkins, of Corpus Christi, M. A. Lloyd's Coffee House, July 20, 1808 We have the pleasure to announce the safe arrival of the Jamaica fleet, consisting of about 130 sail. This fleet, as well as that from the Leeward Islands, recently arrived, has come to a tolerably good market, as prices have within a few days, risen full és per cwt. on every kind of raw sugar. This rise is to be attributed to the distillation of sugar, instead of corn, and not to either a scarcity of the article, or to any export of it, at present. Rum, cotton, coffee, dye-woods, and in fact all kinds of West India produce, are in demand, and likely to be higher in price, particularly the article of cotton-wool, in consequence of very large orders for callicoes, &c. now executing at Manchester and Glasgow, for the Brazils, added to the certainty, now evident, of an open trade to Mexico and Peru, brought about most fortunately for this country, by the diabolical manœuvres of BUONAPARTE, towards his late allies, the Spaniards, but now, and we trust in perpetuity, his de clared enemies. The following China ships are just arrived: True Briton, Henry Addington, Cumberland, Nottingham, Cuffnells, Scaleby Castle, and Retreal. Their cargoes are as follows: viz. 119,795 chests; 10,426,126 lbs. of bohea, congou, campoi, souchong, pekoc, twankay, hyson skin, and hyson tea; 41,929 lbs. ruw silk; 97,300 pieces of nankeen cloth besides several other parcels of goods, the particulars of which are not yet known. spices. We daily expect a fleet of nearly one We are happy to state that the very large orders at Manchester fer the Brazils, has caused the sale of nearly 8000 bags of cotton wool, in one week, at Liverpool, and at very favourable prices: Old Bowed, sold at 19d. to 21d.; New Bowed 21d. to 221d. Orleans 22d. to 2s. Barbadoes 23d. to 23 d. Demarara 2s to 2s 2d. Brazils 25 Id. to 2s 44d. with every appearance of the market being higher. At Manchester there has been a deThe East India Company have declared for mand for water twist, and considerable purşale, on Wednesday the 7th September, 1808, chases have been made in weft. At the East India Company's sale July 12th, prompt 14th October, was sold 4,100 bags black pepper, from 111d. to 11§d. per lb. 268 bags white pepper, from 2s. 14d. to 2s. 6d.-Privilege black pepper, 195 bags, 10 d. to 10 d.; 5 bags with all faults, 8d. to 9f-Private Trade, 119 bags white, at 2s. 2 d. to 2s. 3 d.-Prize pepper gid. to 10 d. per lb. The East India Company have declared for sale, on Friday, Sept. 30th 1808.Prompt 30th December following, Company's cinnamon, 108,000 lbs.-Tinnevally, 8000.Private Trade and Privilege nutmegs, 38 chests 3 boxes; ditto and cloves, 12 chests and 6 boxes; long nutmegs, 2 boxes.-Mace, 557 Ibs.-Prize cloves, 1500 lbs.-Nutinegs, 45000 lbs.-Mace, 9000 lbs; also other prize, Nottingham, are a little employed in their manufactories for the same market; and large orders have been forwarded to the potteries in Staffordshire, for earthern-ware, also to Stourbridge, for quantities of glass ware. This, however, is only the beginning of an extensive commerce to South America, which we have no doubt will wonderfully increase, when the quality of our goods is compared with that of those which the people of that country have been hitherto accustomed to receive, in very scanty supplies, from their parent states in Europe The ribbon manufactory at Coventry, Nunea ton, &c. is nearly at a stand for wait of materials. The trade of Birmingham is principally confined to the getting up of arms, accoutrements, and the home consumption. They were much elevated at a prospect of opening an intercourse with Portugal, but this continnes in suspense, as far as concerns extensive concerns. 68 Cloudy The Average Prices of Navigable Canal Shares, Dock, Stock, and Fire Office Shares, in July 1808, at the Office of Mr. Scott, 28, New Bridge Street, Blackfriars, London.
