Dr. Neale, in the Preface to his Hymns of the Eastern Church, that "if we are to build an ecclectic superstructure on the foundation of the Sarum Book, the East ought to yield its full share of compositions." From that noble field some of the choicest pieces in this little work have been gathered. A few original Hymns, and some additional translations from the Latin, have been written expressly for this Hymnal, by the Rev. Dr. Trend. Particular attention is requested to the directions appointing proper Hymns to be sung at the different Seasons of the Christian Year. They are the result of careful study, and follow, as far as practicable, the Rubrics of the . Ancient Service Books. |
