8.

Sing, all ye citizens of Heaven above,
Glory to GOD

In the highest :

O come, let us adore Him, &c.

Yea, LORD, we greet Thee,
Born this happy morning;
JESU, to Thee be glory given;
WORD of the FATHER,
Now in flesh appearing;
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,

O come, let us adore Him, CHRIST the LORD.

Amen.

Go

OD from on high hath heard,
Let sighs and sorrows cease;

Lo! from the opening Heaven descends
To man the promised Peace.

Hark! through the silent night
Angelic voices swell;

Their joyful songs proclaim that “ GOD
Is born on earth to dwell."

See how the shepherd band
Speed on with eager feet;

Come to the hallow'd cave with them

The holy Babe to greet.

But oh! what sight appears
Within that lowly door!

A manger, stall, and swaddling clothes,
A Child and Mother poor!

Art Thou the CHRIST? the SON?
The FATHER'S Image bright?
And see we Him Whose arm upholds
Earth and the starry height?

Yea, faith can pierce the cloud
Which veils Thy Glory now;
We hail Thee GOD, before Whose Throne
The Angels prostrate bow.

A silent Teacher, LORD,

Thou bid'st us not refuse

To bear what flesh would have us shun,

[ocr errors]

To shun what flesh would choose.

Our swelling pride to cure

With that pure love of Thine,
O be Thou born within our hearts,
Most holy Child divine. Amen.

9. HARK! the herald Angels sing

Peace on earth, and mercy mild,
GOD and sinners reconciled!

Joyful, all ye nations, rise,
Join the triumph of the skies;

With the Angelic host proclaim,
CHRIST is born in Bethlehem!

Hark! the herald Angels sing
Glory to the new-born King!
CHRIST, by highest Heaven adored,
CHRIST, the Everlasting LORD,
Late in time behold Him come,
Offspring of a Virgin's womb!
Veiled in flesh the GODHEAD see,
Hail, Incarnate DEITY!

Pleased as Man with man to dwell,
JESUS, our EMMANUEL.

Hark! the herald Angels sing
Glory to the new-born King!

Hail, the heaven-born Prince of Peace!
Hail, the Sun of Righteousness!
Light and Life to all He brings,
Risen with healing in His wings.
Mild He lays His Glory by,
Born that man no more may die,
Born to raise the sons of earth,
Born to give them second birth!

Hark! the herald Angels sing
Glory to the new-born King! Amen.

10. T and yet remains on high;

HE WORD is made Incarnate,

And Cherubim sing anthems
To shepherds from the sky.

And we with them triumphant
Repeat the hymn again;
"To GOD on high be glory,

"And peace on earth to men!"

While thus they sing your Monarch,
Those bright Angelic bands,
Rejoice, ye vales and mountains!
Ye oceans clap your hands!

Since all He comes to ransom,
By all be He adored,
The Infant born in Bethlehem,
The SAVIOUR and the LORD!

And idol forms shall perish,
And error shall decay,

And CHRIST shall wield His sceptre,

Our LORD and GOD for

aye.

Amen.

Ebening.

11. Look on us,

NFANT, born the world to free,

That in child-like wisdom we

Put on Thy humility.

Thou that midst the beasts did sleep,

Helpless Babe!

From dark foes that seek Thy sheep,

Sacred Shepherd, save and keep.

Thou Who hast Thy GODHEAD laid

All aside,

On the breast of Mother-Maid,

To our weakness lend Thine aid.

Thou Who op'st the heavenly door,
Virgin-born,

THREE IN ONE Whom we adore,
Praise to Thee for evermore.

Amen.

St. Stephen's Day.

12. RIGHTFUL prince of Martyrs thou,

Bind the crown about thy brow;

Fairer far than fading wreath,
Weave we this thy crown of death.

Like a gem, each rugged stone,
Sparkling with thy life-blood, shone;
Nor could stars more brightly shine,
Studded round thy head divine.

From thy forehead's gushing streams
Dart a thousand blending beams,
Till thy glowing countenance
Lightens to an Angel's glance.

Thou the first-slain victim free
To Him the Victim slain for thee;
