375.

THOU art the Way; to Thee alone
From sin and death we flee;
And he who would the Father seek,

Must seek Him, Lord, by Thee.

Thou art the Truth; Thy word alone
True wisdom can impart ;

Thou only canst inform the mind,
And purify the heart.

3 Thou art the Life; the rending tomb
Proclaims Thy conquering arm;

And those who put their trust in Thee
Nor death nor hell shall harm.

4 Thou art the Way, the Truth, the Life;
Grant us that way to know,

That truth to keep, that life to win,
Whose joys eternal flow. Amen.

376.

Bp. G. W. Doane.

on our souls, eternal God, With rays of beauty shine!

O let Thy favour crown our days,

And all their round be Thine!

Did we not raise our hands to Thee,
Our hands might toil in vain ;
Small joy success itself could give,
If Thou Thy love restrain.

3 With Thee let every week begin,
With Thee each day be spent ;

For Thee each fleeting hour improved,
Since each by Thee is lent.

4 Thus cheer us through this desert road, Till all our labours cease,

And Heaven refresh our weary souls

With everlasting peace! Amen.

P. Doddridge.

O GOD of Bethel, by whose hand

Thy people still are fed,

Who, through this weary pilgrimage,
Hast all our fathers led;

Our vows, our prayers, we now present
Before Thy throne of grace;

God of our fathers! be the God
Of their succeeding race.

3 Through each perplexing path of life
Our wandering footsteps guide;
Give us each day our daily bread,
And raiment fit provide.

4 O spread Thy covering wings around
Till all our wanderings cease,
And at our Father's loved abode
Our souls arrive in peace! Amen.

P. Doddridge & J. Logan.

378. SALVATION! oh! the joyful sound!

'Tis pleasure to our ears!

A sovereign balm for every wound,
A cordial for our fears!

Buried in sorrow and in sin,
At hell's dark door we lay ;
But we arise, by grace Divine,
To see a heavenly day.

Salvation ! let the echo fly

The spacious earth around,

While all the armies of the sky

Conspire to raise the sound! Amen.

379.

O MOST merciful,

O most bountiful,

God the Father Almighty!

By the Redeemer's

Sweet intercession,

I. Watts.

Hear us, help us, when we cry! Amen.

380.

Bp. R. Heber.

MAY the grace of Christ our Saviour,

And the Father's boundless love,
With the Holy Spirit's favour,

Rest upon us from above!

Thus may we abide in union

With each other and the Lord,

And possess, in sweet communion,

Joys which earth cannot afford. Amen.

J. Newton.

INDEX OF FIRST LINES.

Abba, Father, while we sing

Abide with me; fast falls the even-tide
All is o'er the pain, the sorrow
All people that on earth do dwell

All praise to Thee, my God, this night
All wondering on the desert ground
Almighty Lord, before Thy throne
Almighty God, in humble prayer
Almighty God, Thy word is cast
Amongst His twelve Apostles
Angels, from the realms of glory
Around the throne of God a band.
Asleep in Jesus! blessed sleep.

As when the Hebrew prophet raised.
At the Lamb's high feast we sing.
Awake, my soul, and with the sun

Before Jehovah's awful throne.

Behold from heaven a Saviour sent
Behold the Lamb of God

Bright and joyful is the morn

Bright was the guiding star that led
Brightly did the light divine
Brightness of the Father's glory

Captain of Israel's host, and Guide
Children of the Heavenly King
Christ is made the sure foundation
Christ the Lord is risen again
Christ the Lord is risen to-day.
Christ, whose glory fills the skies
Christian! dost thou see them?
Christ's everlasting messengers

Come, gracious Spirit, heavenly Dove
Come, Heavenly Spirit, come .
Come, Holy Ghost, Creator, come
Come, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire.
Come, Holy Ghost, who ever One
Come, Holy Spirit, heavenly Dove
Come, labour on

Come, let us join our cheerful songs
Come, Lord Jesus, take Thy rest.
Come, mild and Holy Dove
Come, O come! in pious lays
Come see the place where Jesus lay
Come, Thou long expected Jesus.
Come, ye souls, by sin afflicted
Come, ye thankful people, come
Commit thou all thy griefs
Creator of mankind

Creator of the rolling flood

Creator of the world, to Thee

Creator Spirit! by whose aid

[blocks in formation]

Did Christ o'er sinners weep

Draw nigh, and take the Body of the Lord

Earth to earth, and dust to dust
Expelled by tyrant's harsh command

Faint not, Christian, though the road
Far from these narrow scenes of night
Father! by Thy love and power
Father of heaven, whose love profound.
Father of love, our Guide and Friend
Father of mercies, in Thy Word
Father of mercies, send Thy grace
Finished is the battle now
