Let me not be trifling and careless at this solemn period of my life; but make me to feel the nature and importance of those vows which I am about to take upon myself. Give me a heart, O Lord," to abhor that which is evil, and to cleave to that which is good." Make me not only to understand and believe all the Articles of the Christian Faith, but also to experience. their influence on my heart, and manifest their power in my life and conduct. O that I may so engage in the approaching duty, as to bring down thy blessing upon my soul, to the comfort of my dear parents and instructors, and to the honour of thy holy Name, through Jesus Christ my Lord and Saviour. Amen·

At Confirmation.

O Lord, I am now engaged in a most solemn act of surrendering myself up to thee, and engaging to live to thy glory. Let me not be thoughtless and insincere in my profession. O let me not tell a lie to thee, by saying that I do mean to forsake sin when I do not. Give thy blessing, O Lord, in answer to the prayers that are now offered; and affect me with so deep a sense of the necessity and happiness of a

religious life, that I may henceforward renounce all sin, and wholly follow thee.

Hear me,

O God, for the sake of thy Son Jesus Christ. Amen.

A Prayer after Confirmation.

for me.

O Lord, I thank thee for having given me such Parents and Teachers as feel it their duty to bring me up in the fear of God; and I thank thee for this opportunity of renewing and confirming the engagements into which they entered May I never forget the solemn vow and promise which I have now made. May the recollection of this day be the means of preserving me, through thy grace, when I am tempted to commit sin, and to follow a multitude to do evil. O make me ever to feel my need of the blood of Jesus Christ for the pardon of my sins, and also of thy Holy Spirit to teach me, and to make me good. Preserve me, O Lord, from a hard and insensible heart, and keep me in thy fear all the days of my life, for the sake of thy Son Jesus Christ. Amen.

I BELIEVE IN THE HOLY GHOST; THE HOLY CATHOLIC CHURCH; THE COMMU NION OF SAINTS; THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS; THE RESURRECTION OF THE BODY, AND THE LIFE EVERLASTING. AMEN.

Q.1.-What do you mean when you say,

believe in God?

I

A. I mean to say not only that there is a God, but also that I put my trust in him.

*Q.2—Explain wherein these two things differ? A.-I believe that there is an Emperor of China, but I do not believe in him; for to believe in him, would be to place that trust in him which belongs only to God.

* Q.3.-And what do you mean when you say that there is a God?

A.I mean that there is one eternal, self-existent Being, on whom all things depend, and by whom all things are governed. "There is one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all." Eph. 4. 6.

* Q. 4.-When you say that God is eternal, what do you mean?

A.-I mean that he is without beginning, and without end. Ps. 90. 2.

* 5.-What do you mean by his being selfα

existent ?

A.-I mean that he does not owe his being to

another, as we do, but lives from and by himself.

Ex. 3, 14.

that

*Q. 6.-What do you mean when you say all things depend upon God?”

A. I mean that all things owe their being to him, and depend upon him for their support, and happiness. Rom. 11. 36.

*Q.7.-What do you mean when you say that all things are governed by him?

A.-I mean that all things are under his management, that he ruleth over all, and doeth whatsoever he pleaseth in heaven and earth, so that nothing happens without his knowledge and permission. Dan. 4. 34, 35.

* Q.8.-How do you know that there is such a Being?

A.-My reason tells me so. For when I look around me, I feel assured that the world could

no more make itself, than a watch can make itself, or a house; and therefore I am convinced there must be a maker, that is God.

Q.9-Do all the nations of the earth agree in believing that there is a God?

A. Yes; all nations, however barbarous and distant in their situation from each other, and
