In addition to the foregoing, the Magazine publishes Reports of the Proceedings of Scientific Societies, Letters from Scientific Correspondents, Gossip on the Scientific Events of the Week, and such other information as properly belongs to a Scientific Newspaper. The splendid part played by inventors of every class in this country, under the protection of the Patent Laws, is duly regarded in its columns, in which complete lists and descriptions of all Patents applied for, granted, and extended are weekly recorded, together with lists of all articles protected under the Designs Acts. This part of the Magazine is as full and reliable as the Government records, and makes it, par excellence, the Inventor's Organ. The Report of the Select Committee of the House of Commons on the Arts of Design, says "The Mechanics' Magazine has conferred lasting advantages on the manufactures of the country." Sir Charles Wood, a short time since in the House of Commons, spoke of the Magazine as a great and reliable authority; and Lord Brougham, in the House of Lords, said "The Mechanics' Magazine has, from its commencement, had an extensive circulation, and it communicates, for fourpence per week, far more valuable information, both scientific and practical, than was ever before placed within the reach of even those who could afford to pay six times as much for it." Sir Robert Peel, in his speech at the Annual Meeting of the Blackburn Mechanics' Institution, said-"I was reading the other day your catalogue, which I hastily scanned, containing a list of the books and pamphlets of your Institution, and I do not find one which I think you ought to possess -the Mechanics' Magazine. I think it is an admirable periodical, which should be in every institution designed for the welfare of the industrial classes, just to show you that Science is entering into everything in which we are engaged.
