TENTH ANNUAL REPORT OF THE BOSTON AND LOWELL RAIL-ROAD CORPORATION. To the Honorable, the Legislature of the Commonwealth of Massachu setts: The Directors of the Boston and Lowell Rail-road Corporation, do hereby make their Tenth Annual Report of their acts and doings, receipts and expenditures, under their act of incorporation. The total amount of capital paid in, is The amount expended during the past year, exclusive of amount spent and charged to the cost of the Road, is For repairs on Road, including repairs on bridges. $1,800,000 00 ($6,341 51) and some improvements in drainage, $21,013 51 For repairs on engines and cars, 14,454 72 For fuel, oil, salaries, wages, and all other miscellane For transporting merchandize for the Nashua and For transporting passengers for the Boston and Portland Rail-road Corporation $17,927 95 The amount divided during the past year is $132,000, being two dividends of four per cent. each, on a capital of $1,650,000, which was the amount of capital paid in at the time the dividends were declared. Since the last annual report, four miles more of the second track have been finished and put in use. The amount expended for this purpose, for additional depots, engines, and cars, and towards the completion of the remaining portion of the second track has been, Whole amount expended on the cost of the Road and appurtenances, at the time of the last annual report, $120,766 38 Whole cost of Road to November 30th, 1840, 1,608,476 21 1,729,242 59 70,757 41 $1,800,000 00 The second track is now in use for a length of about 21 miles. About 5 miles more are required to complete this track for the whole distance between Boston and Lowell. Since the last annual report, there has been expended toward the completion of the Road, Depot buildings and appurtenances, the sum of 48,656 31 474,434 91 Total cost of Road January 1st, 1841, $523,091 22 This corporation commenced the use of the Boston and Maine Railroad, which connects with this Road at the line of the State of New Hampshire, on the first day of January, 1840, under a contract made with that corporation, a copy of which was submitted to the Legislature, in their fourth annual report. It was conditioned in this contract, that "if the said Road shall be constructed to any town beyond Exeter, the contract is to be void." That corporation having determined to extend the Road beyond Exeter, this corporation have entered into a new contract with the Boston and Maine Rail-road Corporation, for its use, when completed to Dover, in New Hampshire.
