THE OMNIBUS. "There he sat, and, as I thought, expounding the law and the prophets, until on drawing a little nearer, I found he was only expatiating on the merits of a brown horse."-BRACEBRIDGE HALL. WAY BILL :- -The Doncaster Week. ACH man sees and puts things from his own point of view. The Learned Blacksmith merely esteemed Melton Mowbray as a veritable Goshen of pork-pies. The Scotch minister wrote of his spouse that "she was taken by a bilious attack from my bosom to Abraham's ;" and Drunken Barnaby "saw nothing on the banks of the Don save a lively Levite," and sang not of racers and horsecopers, but "As all things come by natur, Concerning looms from Doncastur, And weaving done by weyter." At one time we seemed likely to be far shorter of matter. The Field was believing against hope in Achievement, but no " prophet," priest, or layman seemed to follow suit; and the Corporation had visions of Vauban engaged in another stern-chase of Hermit from the half-distance, and a Jordanic treasure-house scarcely two-thirds full. However, The Great Yorkshire lifted them, one fine afternoon, out of the mire; and for three weeks the meeting of the horse and the mare became the head-centre of Turfite thought. We heard a V.S. (not the hippophagist) asserting that the mare had laid on six stone of flesh since Ascot, and each stone was worth an honest £250 to the worshipful Corporation of Doncaster. They had their thorns in the flesh notwithstanding. The "lower house"-betting men, who did not belong to Billy Nicholl's brigade, were positively furious at the notice that stools, clogs, and desks were to be kept out of the enclosure, and quite a battle-royal was expected. Hence the authorities had to send north and south for police supplies, and gathered in 200 plus nine mounted serjeants-and Colonel Cobb, for aught we know. We heard dark rumours of 60 being held in reserve to "sweep the enclosure" of the "bagmen" if they had tried it on ; but "pop'lar feeling" subsided, and the injured innocents contented |
