VAUBAN,

WINNER OF THE 2,000 GS. STAKES.

ENGRAVED 6Y E. HACKER, PROM A PAINTING BY HARRY HALL.

BY CASTOR.

Vauban, bred by the Duke of Beaufort in 1864, is by Muscovite out of Palm, by Tadmor, her dam Figtree, by Envoy-Azora, by Voltaire.

Muscovite, bred by Mr. Osbaldeston in 1849, is by Hetman Platoff out of a Camel mare, her dam Lady Elizabeth, by Lottery-Miss Wentworth, by Cervantes. Muscovite, as the property of the late Mr. Charles Greville, ran occasionally only, up to his seventh or eighth year. He was reserved chiefly for the great handicaps, and won the Cesarewitch as well as running up for one or two other big races. Muscovite's stock came out in 1861, with that good horse Ivanhoff as his first winner, followed by Good-for-Nothing, Bearing Rein, Kromeski, Romanoff, Attention, Bunch, Siberia, winner of the 1,000 Gs. Stakes, Todleben, Brunnow, and Orloff, who have all placed something to the credit of the account. Muscovite is now located at Chantilly.

Palm, bred by the late Duke of Bedford in 1854, won a lot of matches right off at two years old, but never appeared afterwards, and went to the stud at four years old. Her first foal, in 1859, was Palm Oil, afterwards Raindeer, as they choose to write it, by Hesperus, followed by an own sister, Crytheia, in 1861. The mare then passed into the possession of the Duke of Bedford, throwing Todleben by Muscovite in 1862, his own brother Vauban in 1864, Herald by Trumpeter in 1865, another colt by Trumpeter in 1866, and a third by the same horse this season, while she has been put to him again.

Vauban is a dark bay, or in places a brown horse, standing a good fifteen-two-and-a-half. He has a neat blood-like head, an arched neck, and very deep shoulders. He is also deep in his girth, and very good between the jockey's knees, with a nice round barrel, and strong back. He is, however, high in his rump, with a peculiar dip towards the tail which gives him rather a plain look. He has fair quarters, with capital thighs and gaskins, and good arms. He stands very upright in his stable, but improves when in action, being altogether an active corky little horse. He has, moreover, the recommendation of a very even temper, is a famous doer, and has never shirked his work nor his corn.

In 1866 Vauban, then two years old, made his first appearance, in the colours of his breeder, the Duke of Beaufort, at Ascot Summer Meeting, when, ridden by Fordham, he ran second to Colonel Pearson's Achievement for a Two-Year-Old Triennial Stake, colts 8st. 10lb., fillies 8st. 71b.-T.Y.C.-Lord Stamford's Rupee filly also running. 100 to 12 on Achievement, who won by a length and a half.

Vauban is again engaged very heavily during the season, and his name is down for most of the good things; such as the Doncaster St. Leger, the Grand Prize of Paris, the Newmarket St. Leger, and a Triennial, a Biennial, and a Post Match against Lord Glasgow at Newmarket. At Ascot he is in the Prince of Wales' Stakes, and the Fourteenth Triennial; at Goodwood in the Rous Stakes, the Drawing-Room Stakes, a 300 sov. Sweepstakes, the Bentinck Memorial Stakes, and another Sweepstakes; while he has also other engage. ments at Stockbridge, Stamford, York, Doncaster, in the Doncaster Stakes, and at Monmouth.

Vauban is trained by John Day at Danebury, who brought him to the post for the Derby in the finest possible condition. His jockey, George Fordham, like some other famous horsemen before him, cannot win the Derby, although he has been second on Lord Clifden, and third on Vauban,
