PAST AND PRESENT, CHARTISM, AND SARTOR RESARTUS. BY THOMAS CARLYLE. New Edition. One vol. 12mo, Cloth, $1 00; Sheep, $125; Half Calf, $1 85.

Mr. Carlyle is about the only living writer whose opinions are of value, even when it is impossible to agree with them. No one is more fond than he of paradox, but few men's paradoxes hint at so important truths. No one with a more autocratic dogmatism sets up strong men as heroes, or condemns the hapless possessors of pot-bellies to infamy; but then his judgments, even where they can not be confirmed, always enforce some weighty principle which we were in danger of forgetting. And if it sometimes happens that neither the hero nor the principles commend themselves, still the thoroughness of the execution and the fire with which all his writings are instinct, never fail to make a great work.-London Review.
