THE DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE was established as a Bureau by Act of Congress May 15th, 1862. On February 11th, 1889, it was created a Department, and its then head, Norman J. Colman, took a seat in the Cabinet of President Cleveland. The task of the Department is the deve cpment of scientific methods of agriculture, in which it has been highly successful.
