La ville d'Athènes, voulant conserver le souvenir de la dispute qui s'éleva entre Neptune et Minerve; fit élever près du Parthenon de petits temples antiques, à l'endroit même où ces divinités firent naître, l'un une source d'eau salée, l'autre un olivier. Le temple dans lequel se trouvait enfermé cet arbre sacré reçut le nom de Pandrose, l'une des filles de Cécrops. I était à jour sur trois de ses faces, et six Cariatides en soutenaient le toit du côté de l'entrée. Ces constructions furent faites du temps de Périclės, et on présume que les Cariatides sont l'ouvrage de Phidias. Celle que nous donnons ici fut enlevée d'Athènes par Lord Elgin, et transportée en Angleterre); elle est maintenant dans le British-museum. Pour la remplacer, il en fit mouler une en pierre factice, elle a dû être envoyée à Athènes, mais probablement elle n'y est pas arrivée. Afin d'éviter la destruction du monument, le célèbre antiquaire Breton avait fait construire en attendant un pilier carré. Un voyageur, voulant témoigner le ressentiment que lui faisait éprouver cette espèce de barbarie, traça ces mots sur l'une des Cariatides; PHIDIAS FECIT, et sur le pilier ceux-ci : LORD ELGIN FECIT. The City of Athens wishing to preserve the remembrance of the dispute which arose between Neptune and Minerva, erected small antique temples near the Parthenon, on the spot where one of these Divinities produced a spring of salt water, and the other an olive tree The temple in which this sacred tree was inclosed, received the name of Pandrosos, from one of the daughters of Cecrops, it presented three fronts and six Cariatides supported the roof. The building was erected in the time of Pericles, and the Cariatides are thought to be the work of Phidias. The one here given was removed by Lord Elgin, and sent to England, where it is placed in the British Museum. A similar one executed in stone, was to have been sent to Athens, to replace it, but which is probable not yet arrived. In order to prevent the destruction of the monument, the celebrated antiquarian Breton, in the interim caused a square pillar to be erected, when a traveller wishing to testify his disapprobation of this sort of barbarism, traced these words on one of the Cariatides :Phidias fecit, and on the pillar as follows: Lord Elgin fecit.
