SIMON CANTARINI,

Simon Cantarini, plus connu sous le nom de Pesarèze, naquit, en 1612, à Oropezza, près de Pesaro. Il étudia d'abord dans l'atelier de Pandolfi, puis dans celui de Ridolfi. Il prit aussi pour modèle les gravures de Carrache et les tableaux de Baroche, dont il aimait la couleur. Mais deux tableaux du Guide, l'Annonciation et saint Pierre recevant les clefs du Paradis, ayant été placés dans l'église de Fano, où se trouvait Cantarini, il s'enthousiasma tellement pour ce nouveau style, qu'il s'appliqua exclusivement à l'imiter. En effet, il fit pour la même chapelle un saint Pierre guérissant un paralytique à la porte du Temple, et imita à s'y méprendre la manière du peintre bolonais.

Cantarini voulut encore approcher davantage de son modėle, il alla trouver Guido Reni et devint son condisciple. Affectant d'abord la docilité et la déférence, cachant soigueusement son habileté, la découvrant ensuite peu à peu, il gagna l'estime de son maître et celle de toute la ville. Mais bientôt il critiqua imprudemment Dominiquiu, l'Albane, et Guido lui-même. Il alla à Rome étudier Raphaël, et ne perdit rien de son esprit caustique. Cantarini passa ensuite à Mantoue son caractère lui fit encourir la disgrâce du duc de Mantoue, dont il ne put réussir à faire le portrait. Il en éprouva un tel chagrin, qu'il tomba malade et se retira à Vérone, où il mourut en 1648.

Les ouvrages de Cantarini sont recommandables parla grâce et la pureté du dessin. Ila gravé à l'eau-forte 37 pièces d'une pointe spirituelle, qui a du rapport avec celle de Guido Reni.

Simone Cantarini better known under the name of Pesareze was born in 1612 at Oropezza near Pesaro. He at first studied under Pandolfi afterwards under Ridolfi, he also took the engravings of Caracci as models, as also the pictures of Barochi, whose colouring he admired. Two pictures of Guido, (the Annunciation, and Saint Peter receiving the keys of Paradise), being placed in the church of Fano, where Cantarini happened to be, he was so delighted with the style of them, that he applied himself closely to endeavour to imitate them.

In fact, he painted a Saint Peter curing a paralytic at the door of the temple, and in which he imitated so truly the style of the Bolognese painter, as to be mistaken for his work.

Cantarini still further desirous of approaching his model, sought out Guido Reni, and became his fellow student. Behaving respectfully, and carefully concealing his talent, discovering it only by degrees, he acquired the esteem of his master, and that of the whole city. But he soon imprudently criticised Dominichino, Albani, and Guido himself and went to Rome to study Raphael where he lost nothing of his caustic disposition. Cantarini then went to Mantua, his temper however lost him the friendship of the Duke of Mantua whose portrait he was not permitted to take, which circumstance affected him so greatly that he fell ill; and retiring to Verona died in 1648.

The works of Cantarini are remarkable for the elegance and purity of their outline, he has etched 37 subjects in a pleasing style, much resembling that of Guido Reni.
