A POEM. 4to., portraits and plates by the Author, Henry Raeburn, and Lockhart Bogle; the text printed on hand-made paper in Caxton old-faced type with specially designed woodcut borders and capitals; cloth, richly decorated with a Celtic ornament 1900 The incidents of this poem are woven together with a Chaucerian method, which imparts to the whole work a pleasantly constructive plan, giving it the form of an epic. The poem, which consists of thirteen hundred lines, is illustrated by twenty plates executed in the autotype process; of these, fourteen are from originals by the author, and four by the well-known highland artist, Mr. LOCKHART BOGLE. There is also included a facsimile of an unpublished letter of Sir Walter Scott, and a portrait by RAEBURN, hitherto unexhibited, belonging to Dunvegan Castle. The poem opens with a general description of the romantic position of this oldest-inhabited castle in the British Isles, which has served as the stronghold for the chieftains of the Clan MacLeod for over 600 years, and has already been rendered famous by Sir Walter Scott in his "Lord of the Isles," and by the account of Dr. Johnson's visit given by Boswell in his "Tour to the Hebrides." It goes on to deal with the interesting traditions and legends of the ancient fortress, followed by a history of the grim feuds which took place about 1600 between Rory Mohr MacLeod and Donald Gorm, the chieftain of the Macdonald Clan; concluding with a description of the castle at the present time. "This volume, while not without interest for lovers of poetry, as containing a gracefully written narrative drawn from the history of the Highlands and the Clan MacLeod, appeals to a wider circle, and will please many a lover of the Highlands, who cares little for poetry. The work, a long piece in Pope's couplets, describes Dunvegan Castle, and tells the legendary and traditional history of that ancient place of strength. It recounts with animation the fighting that took place about the castle in the seventeenth century, between Rory Mohr MacLeod and the chieftain of the Macdonalds. The poem has a graceful simplicity and elevation of diction which makes it always agreeable to read, if it never glows with any noticeable intensity of fire. Then the volume is remarkable for the handsomeness of its decorative appointments and illustra tions. Some of these are from the author's brush, some by Mr. Lockhart Bogle, and they include a facsimile, not particularly relevant to the work, but interesting in itself, of a letter from Sir Walter Scott. The book, in a word, is a worthy artistic tribute to the romance and history of Dunvegan, and it will be highly prized by anyone whom these matters closely touch."-The Scotsman, December 4th, 1899. No pains have been spared to make it valuable as a work of reference, and in respect of the illustrations representative of all the very best of Rossetti's work. It must have seemed strange to many, and a matter for real regret, that no attempt has ever been made to illustrate on a large scale, and from every side, the life-work of this great and most original painter, who possessed, almost beyond all others that could be named, the secret of abstract beauty. One reason for this has always been the difficulty of access to his pictures; the state of seclusion in which many of them were guarded having heretofore rendered such attempts impossible. This was doubly unfortunate, because Rossetti himself, during his lifetime, consistently avoided exhibitions, and discouraged all attempts to let his work become popularly appreciated. That it would have done so cannot for a moment be doubted. The qualities that made it too deep and poetical for the critics of 1850 appeal in a very different fashion to the eyes of to-day, educated as they are to the even subtler beauties of Burne-Jones. For most people the name of Rossetti is a power, though they scarcely know why. They know that in some dim way he has changed the spirit of art, has struck new chords from the lyre of poetry, has heralded a régime of sober taste and decorative purity.
