16mo. woodcut frontispiece, another woodcut on last page of Preface, and the printer's colophon at end; old sheep

£ 8. d.

Date at end of preface, 30 Julie, 1580 14 14 0 This is the First Edition of the version, having been printed perhaps in 1581. It is undescribed, and has been perhaps hitherto unknown. The earliest mentioned by Watt, Lowndes, Allibone, and other Bibliographers, is that of 1584. There is no copy in the Huth library nor in the British Museum. The earliest in the latter collection is the reprint of 1587.

Thomas Rogers gives only three books like William Atkinson.

Sm. 4to. 81 leaves; olive morocco extra, gilt edges (Charles Lewis)

1642 RARE. A pretty love-romance in verse, in which the author shows a curiously intimate acquaintance with Welsh and Irish matters. It would be absurd to blame him for the elements of his plot, since the custom of his time allowed obscenities.

Life and Works of Charles Lamb, edited by the Rev. Alfred
Ainger, Edition de Luxe, in 12 vols. 8vo. cloth, to be completed in 1900

1899-1900

Two volumes of this edition (Elia) have already appeared.
"Canon Ainger-I do not know if he can ever be equalled, but certainly he can
never be surpassed as an editor of Lamb; for, added to his innate sympathy with
his subject and his exquisitely critical judgment, and unbounded knowledge and love
of literature, the grace of his own style, in its combined dignity and sweetness,
forms the most perfect setting of Lamb's witty delicacies."-Minnie Jackson.

The book is in three parts, of which the first two were written by Thomas Lanquet
or Lanquette; the third, which is the major portion of the work, by Thomas Cooper,
who, in this edition, appears to claim the entire authorship. The former two parts
appeared first in 1549 under the name of Lanquette. The three parts were faultily
printed in 1559 without Cooper's consent. The first authorised and perfect edition was

the one described above.
