it is only the olive-green binding which distinguishes the books of Madame Victoire from those of her two sisters. The libraries of those three sisters, consisting chiefly of books of solid erudition, form a curious contrast to the collections made by most of the distinguished members of the French Court in their time.

In addition to all the subjects forming the plates of the celebrated published work, these original drawings include 680 others, most of which are in no respect inferior in interest to those that have been engraved. In consequence of its comprising so many unedited illustrations, the entire collection acquires a much greater intrinsic value than it could derive from consisting merely of the originals of the plates themselves. So truly a unique collection of architectural studies of so much interest and importance, and which have obtained the concurrent testimony of the most competent judges, needs no further praise.

The following letter, dated March 20th, 1832, addressed by the author to the bookseller who sold the work to Jeffry Wyatville, is inserted in the first volume :— "Understanding that you have purchased at the selling room of Messrs. Southgate & Co. my original Sketches of the Antiquities of Normandy, I think it proper to write you this and informing that you possess not only the original sketches of the abovementioned work, but likewise of many other subjects which were intended for this publication, but never were published; and I hereby declare on my honor, that it does not remain in my hands or any body else any other sketches or copies of them concerning the work of the Antiquities of Normandy."
