"For Chronology there is a great French work, L'Art de Vérifier les Dates."-
Prof. Smith on History.

[ocr errors]

"The necessity of supplying historians and antiquarians with requisite information was long since felt in France, and produced the publication of that splendid monument of learning, L'Art de Vérifier les Dates,' which has left little to be done by subsequent chronologists besides the humble duties of translation and abridgement."— Sir Harris Nicolas's Chronology of History.

"Dom Maur. d'Antine had the first idea of this celebrated work. He died before its completion: it was published by two of the brotherhood, Don Clément and Dom Durand, in 1750. It was a complete chaos. Don Clément undertook the task of reducing it to order, and published a new edition of it in 1770, which entirely eclipsed the original. After thirteen years' additional labour Don Clément announced what he modestly called the third edition. The chronological table was carried on another century; as well as that of the eclipses, calculated by Père Pingré. Other important additions were made to the three folio volumes, the first of which appeared in 1783." 13 BIOGRAPHIE UNIVERSELLE, ancienne et moderne, par Michaud, 52 vols. MYTHOLOGIE, 3 vols. This splendid work, the most beautiful and the most authentic on Mediæval Costume, embracing a period of 1100 years-from the VIth to the XVIth century—was published unbound at 1520 francs. The new edition is a much inferior book, having been reproduced by chromolithography instead of hand-colouring. 24 JACQUEMIN (R.). 1897

This work has been written by men who have had long experience in teaching, to
supply the want of a compendious History of Medieval Europe, from the middle of the
4th to the close of the 15th century, which has been long felt in universities and schools.
A distinguished Professor of Modern History in one of our leading universities, to
whom a copy has been sent, writes: “The book covers ground on which it has always
been hard to get a suitable book for educational purposes, and, so far as I can judge,-
I have as yet only examined the German History of the 10th century-it is thoroughly
sound and clear."

contain the text. Fol. 113a: Cy finist le quart volume. . This
colophon is in thirteen lines and is in precisely the same phraseology as
the three preceding.

4 vols in 3, small folio, with signatures; printed in double columns,
Lettres de forme, 46 lines to the column; the first twenty leaves of the
first vol. a little wormed, the copy being nevertheless a large and fine one,
in blue morocco extra, gilt edges, from the library of Frederick Perkins
Paris, about 1495
According to Brunet, Verard printed two editions, the first having a colophon in
each volume precisely like that in the above copy; the other printed after 1500 as
appears from a change in Verard's address indicated in the colophons, namely "deuant
la rue neuue Nostre Dame." He also specifies another distinctive mark on the titles,
in the initial letter L; saying that there are two men's heads in the L of the second
edition and only one in the L of the first.

Now here we have two heads in the L of Vols. II, III, IV, and only one in that of
Vol. I; while the colophon is in all four volumes the one that marks the first edition.
The most reasonable deduction is that Verard possessed both forms of the L when he
first printed the book, and that either form was used in printing.

Lord Crawford's copy fetched £81, although it was a mixed one; and other copies
have brought considerably more, as for instance that of Baron Double which sold for
4000 fr.

The time seems to have arrived for a new edition of Gibbon's great workfurnished with such notes and appendices as may bring it up to the standard of recent historical research. Edited by a scholar who has made this period his special study, and issued in a convenient form and at a moderate price, this edition should fill an obvious void.

This genealogy is not to be found in any other publication of this description. The book is divided into four parts, Les Souverains du XIXe Siccle; Les Vingt-cinq Maisons Souveraines; Maisons auparavant souveraines; Mariages morganatiques. 53 LOUANDRE (C.).
