1899 "Mr. Heron-Allen's new volume on Edward Fitzgerald's Rubâ'iyât' is destined to set at rest for ever the vexed question of how far that incomparable poem is to be considered a translation and how far an original work.

66

'Mr. Heron-Allen prints Fitzgerald's quartrains on the left hand page, and on the opposite side gives a literal translation of the Persian sources whence they were drawn. The result is a volume of extraordinary interest to the student, and a proof that besides being a great poet, Fitzgerald understood the difficult art of translation as it is, unhappily, understood by few.

"For the true artistic translation is not the most faithful rendering of the word, of the phrase, nor even of the illustration of the metaphor-often quite inappropriate to the genius of the language in which the translator works.

66

46

The true artist sets himself to give the spirit of the original, and knows how to clothe it in metaphor and image of a corresponding, but not of an identical, felicity. Fitzgerald has thus produced a translation so essentially faithful, and at the same time an original poem of such exquisite beauty, that for English readers, he and Omar shine as stars of the same magnitude."-Literature, March 25th, 1899. 388 FLOWER (Sir W. This the last opportunity of securing Parts VII to X of this important work, should not be missed by the possessors of Parts I-VI. Of these six parts 300 copies were printed, whilst of Parts VII to X only 100. Only five copies remain unsold.

The last four parts are of higher artistic merit than the preceding six; they contain more coloured plates.

This work consists of a collection of measured drawings from Buildings, chiefly in or near Delhi and Agra, and parts of Rajputana, arranged in a series of Portfolios with short descriptive notes of the places from which they have been taken. The drawings have all been made with care, and arranged together in parts, each sheet being loose,

The plates are produced to large scales, so that they may prove useful to Schools

Many of the designs can be used in stone, in wood, or in metal work, and in wall
decoration.

Printed for private circulation, 1853 Inscribed “with the author's compliments." 437 PHOTOGRAPHS (500) of the Ancient Monuments, Temples, and Sculptures of India

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR INDIA IN COUNCIL granted permission to use the very large collection of photographic negatives of Ancient Buildings, Sculptures, etc., from all parts of India, now in the possession of the India Office. These illustrate very fully the history and development of the various styles of Indian Architecture from the earliest times, in Buddhist, Brahmanical and Jaina Caves to Dravidian, Chalukyan, Indo-Aryan, and Saracenic temples, mosques, and other buildings. They constitute an indispensable series of illustrations of the art, history and mythology of India, and are of the very highest importance and interest to Orientalists, Artists, and others, in University and Art Libraries, Oriental Institutes, etc.

These Indian archæological photographs are regarded by experts who have seen them to be so important for the study of Oriental Art and History that the present work was undertaken to supply a felt want. It is to consist of three portfolios, and is published by subscription.

After the work was commenced, it was found that a large and important collection of photographs in the Imperial Museum at Calcutta was also available, but their introduction has caused delay in issuing the first. Parts II and III will follow in rapid succession, as the plates have been very nearly all selected and printed.

Part I contains 170 plates, of which 26 illustrate the Bharhut Stûpa;
19, the Sânchi Stupâs; 6, the Sârnâth remains; and 83, the many
interesting Gandhara or Græco-Buddhist sculptures found around
Peshawar. There are, besides, illustrations of Asoka inscriptions,
Bhâja Cave Temples, Mathura sculptures, etc. The Letterpress
refers to all published sources of information respecting the different
groups of remains, sculptures, etc.

Part I, square folio, 170 plates, with descriptive text, is now ready, in a
portfolio

Parts II and III are nearly ready, each

A series of portraits of the Chiefs of Rajputana and of their Ancestors as far back as the founder of each family, or the reign of Akbar, that is for about 300 years. The Portraits are careful reproductions in colour of originals which are in possession of the Chiefs and were the work, it is understood on good evidence, of contemporary artists in each case.

The Rajputana Princes have shown considerable interest in the project and have placed their portraits at the disposal of Brigade-Surgeon Lieut.-Col. Hendley, C.I.E., of Jeypore, the author of numerous works on Indian Art.
