Atlas of 17 COLOURED PLATES, in separate cover, sewed 1899 The trustees of the British Museum having sanctioned the publication of a series of volumes on the Moths of the World, and entrusted Sir George Hampson with the commencement of the work, I beg to call your attention, as being interested in the classification of the Lepidoptera, to the following scheme, which has been approved of for the work. The chief want of entomologists working at this subject at the present time is a comparative analysis of the genera in each family, on the lines of the classification originated by Herrich-Schäfer, and Lederer for the European fauna, and amplified of late years by Snellen, Meyrick, J. B. Smith, E. L. Ragonot and others, for various groups of the Palearctic, Nearctic, Oriental, and Australian faunas, and it is thought that the best way to supply this want is by the publication of such a work as the above. 298 LEWIN (W.). RHOPALOCERA AFRICE AUSTRALIS; a Catalogue of South 1899 "In submitting this volume to the entomological public, the author trusts that the method of treatment will commend itself. The recent work that has been accomplished in the classification of the Lepidoptera by Chapman, Dyar, Packard and others, has rendered a radical rearrangement necessary. In commencing with the more generalised, and proceeding to the more specialised, superfamilies, the author considers that he has adopted a logical course that will meet with the approval of those best qualified to judge in this matter. It has been considered better to complete thoroughly a few superfamilies rather than to attempt to deal with a large number superficially, and it is hoped that the separate treatment of the main points in the life-history of each species dealt with, will be of advantage to the various classes of entomologists-synonymists, systematists, biologists, and those that study the subject under its geographical, or any of its philosophical aspects."-Preface. 356 WAHLBERG.
