An important and valuable MS. There are 335 drawings of horses' bits, bridles, and straps, the figures being of the natural size. Twenty-four of the drawings are most artistically FINISHED IN COLOURS (one of them represents a mule led by a man in rich costume); the rest are in outline. The ornament displayed in the designs of the bits, etc. and the artistic finish of the drawings are very remarkable.

1062 WEIL (G.) Geschichte der Chalifen nach handschriftlichen grösstentheils noch unbenützten Quellen bearbeitet, 3 vols. 8vo. hf. calf

Mannheim, 1846 1063 West Africa. ANTIQUITIES from the CITY of BENIN and from other parts of West Africa in the British Musem. By C. H. READ, Keeper in the Department of the British and Medieval Antiquities and Ethnography, and O. M. DALTON, M.A., Senior Assistant. Royal folio, with 32 fine collotype plates; in boards, £1. 5s, or, in half morocco

1899

The present publication contains a selection of the principal objects obtained by the recent successful expedition sent to Benin to punish the natives of that city for a treacherous massacre of a peaceful English mission. To these are added a number of ivory carvings, which have been in the Museum for some time.

1064 WORLD-MAP, by Alonso de Santa Cruz, drawn and designed in 1539-42 and finished in 1542. A reproduction in photographic facsimile of the unique MS. original now preserved in Stockholm, five large sheets folded in an impl. portfolio, with a roy. 8vo. explanatory text by E. W. Dahlgreen (in English), published at £2. 16s Stockholm, 1892

The existence of this unique map was only recently made known. It is a work of great Cartographical importance, especially for the American student: Santa Cruz having been the Cosmograpo Mayor of the Royal Department of Charts at Seville. Dahlgren believes that it may be regarded as an exact replica of the Pattern-Map now lost, of which copies were furnished to Spanish seamen sent out by the Crown to America.

Only 100 copies have been reproduced.
