182 SAVILLE-KENT (W.) The Naturalist in Australia, illustrated by 50 full-page collotypes, 9 coloured plates by Keulemans and other artists, and over 100 illustrations in the text, portrait and autograph, royal 4to. (pub. £3. 38), cloth 1897 I. General and Introductory. II. Birds. III. Lizards. IV. Termites (White Ants). V. Houtman's Abrolhos. VI. Fishes. VII. Pearl and Pearl-Oysters. VIII. Marine Miscellanea. IX. Insect Oddities. X. Vegetable Vagaries. Appendix: The Boomerang.

A delightful volume of Natural History Sketches from West Australia, of interest alike to the general reader and to the scientific enquirer.

A considerable portion of the work deals with Mr. Saville Kent's specialité, Fishes
and Aquatic Zoology, but other branches of Natural History, including both Zoology
and Botany, receive a large share of attention.

Mr. Saville Kent was acting as Commissioner of Fishes to the Government of
Western Australia, and devotes most of his book to the Natural History of that
Colony.

184 WEBBER (James) Views in the South Seas, impl. folio, 15 coloured plates
(i.e. 16, wanting the ninth), hf. bd.
1808
Perhaps the earliest book giving pictorial representations of New Zealand.
185 Autographs. Letters from W. E. Gladstone (three, 1878-79-86); Dr.
Jowett (two, no year date); Dean Stanley (one, 1873 or 1875);
Stopford Brooke (one, no date); addressed to J. M. Capes who had
sent his books
All characteristic. The addressee had been "to Rome and back" and was fond of
writing on the early church. Gladstone's last letter is a plain revelation (in four pages)
of his sense of the "unreality of Genesis," but of his unwillingness to go any further on
the road to disbelief.

Aubrey Beardsley is considered by his soundest and best qualified critics to
have produced his greatest and most enduring work previous to, and during, his art
editorship of "The Yellow Book." He stood as one alone in the world of artistic
production, and Mr. Marillier, in his introduction to this volume, has justly stated that
his incomparable genius was for the few; yet one is almost tempted to suggest, at least
to hope, that that "few" is by no means insignificant; or, granting their lack in
numbers, we may affirm with confidence that, included in that following, are some very
noble and keenly critical minds.

Born in 1629, Sir Robert Clayton, who began life without education, had achieved at his death in 1707 a position of wealth and honour, which led to the foundation in his successor's person of a baronetcy that still flourishes. He was accused in his own time of usury and extortion, and of having resorted to unscrupulous measures in opposition to the Tory party, for which he narrowly escaped the block.

Dryden mentioned him thus, in " Absalom and Achitopel" :

"Blest times, when Ishban, he whose occupation

So long has been to cheat, reforms the nation!"

[Kralitz in Moravia] 1579-1601 12 0 0 EXTREMELY RARE, most of the copies having been burnt by the Catholic party. The book was printed at the private Moravian Press, established at Kralitz, by Baron Jan Zarotjn. The translation was made directly from the originals by several learned Moravians, and is renowned as one of the best versions of the Bible in any language. It was finished in 1593, but there are two editions of the sixth volume, of which the later one, dated 1601, is found in the above copy.

Printed in types cut after the letters of the MS., so as to render this book an approximate facsimile of the Codex. The Gospels and Acts, in parallel Greek and Latin, in a hand of the sixth century, with many curious variations in the text. A grand example of binding. 213 CODEX BEZE Cantabrigiensis Qvattvor Evangelia et Actvs Apostolorvm complectens Græce et Latine.. 2 vols. impl. 4to. consisting of 510 leaves (830 pp.) of facsimile, back and front, cloth, uncut Cantabrigiæ, 1899 12 12 0 This must be regarded as the first genuine and true edition of the famous Codex, which has been the cause of so much controversy, and which probably represents the Bible as known in Gaul towards the end of the sixth century.

214 THE PURPLE GOSPELS OF ROSSANO, in Greek, a MS. of the sixth century written in silver letters upon purple vellum, and adorned with MINIATURES of singular value and importance. A Treatise on the subject of the Miniatures, roy. 8vo. with 25 photographs; sd. Leipzig, 1899

These Miniatures hold a very important rank as monuments in the history of Art. There is no such other collection in existence to illustrate the relationship between classical and Byzantine Christian Art and the relation of both to the medieval Art of the West. The MS. was probably written in Byzantium in the time of Justinian. The pictures are akin rather to the earlier style of Græco-Roman than to the recognised Byzantine manner, and are suggestive of a new view of the elements which went to produce the Art of the Middle Ages.
