EXTREMELY RARE, The dedication is dated 20 June 1556, and the preface ends on Thomas's day (21 December), 1556; so that we may assume the book was produced early in 1557. There is an edition printed at Marburg and bearing that year, in which there are rude cuts and an attempt at a map of part of Brazil. Here the woodcuts are very fine, and the map was not included among them.

The narrative is one of the most curious of all those that were published in the sixteenth century. The author went out for the second time in 1549 and returned in 1554 after having spent nine months in captivity among the Tupi people in Brazil. The second part of the book, which has a distinct title on its first page, is appropriated to a description of the ways of savage life.
