Paris, 1551 The woodcuts and diagrams are improved copies of those in the 1534 edition, and the large map is a faithful copy of the one which appeared at Antwerp in 1548. There are some slight modifications in the text, as for instance in substituting French illustrations for Flemish or German ones here and there. The Usus Annuli Astronomici is added at the end. Besides the map, there are 72 leaves in signatures of A-H, K—T,

in fours.

To do this the author says he had travelled 7000 miles in eighteen months. He was a Swede by birth, but had his residence in Southampton County, Virginia.

1809 This was the first book of scientific value on the subject of Paraguay and the populations round the La Plata river; and it has remained one of the highest authority. Azara was a captain in the Spanish service, but much of his work was done against the desire and without the knowledge of the colonial authorities.

Only five books of the twelfth Decade were recovered by Manoel Fernandez de Villa-Real, who published them for the first time in 1645, at Paris, where he was then residing as Portuguese Consul and Minister. (He was rewarded seven years later by being put to death at an Auto-da-Fe for suppose'l Judaical heresy.)
